Fortnightly hosts reassembly event

ADA— Ada Fortnightly Study Club’s Reassembly Day is Sept. 18. For more information, phone 580-310-0456 or 580-332-3485 no later than Sept 11. There will be a luncheon meeting of the four departments, Music, Progressive Drama, Modern Book and 21st Century. A scholarship will be awarded to an East Central University student of political science. The speaker will be photojournalist, author and ECU faculty member Linda Shaefer.



Arts and Heritage hosts Friday event

ADA — Ada Arts and Heritage Center will resume its schedule of First Friday receptions Sept. 5. Entertainment will be furnished by Moonlighters, a well-known group of musicians from the University and community. There will be a light lunch served beginning at 11:30 a.m. and the music will begin at 12:20 p.m. The event is open to the public. There is no charge for the event but donations are accepted.

Fund raising activities discussed

KONAWA — The 2009 Konawa senior class and their parents/guardians are asked to attend a meeting Tuesday. Sept. 9, 2008 at 5:30 p.m. in the Kennedy Library Dougan Room to discuss various fundraisers and activities. The 2009 Konawa senior class and their parents are selling spirit items at all home games. Items can also be purchased at ‘A Brand New U’ located at 110 N. Broadway in Konawa. Proceeds go to fund senior activities.



Senior games set at Duncan Sept. 25

DUNCAN — Simmons Center in Duncan will host its 14th annual Southwest Oklahoma Senior Games Thursday, Sept. 25, from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The games are non-competitive so everyone can participate. Fee is $12 and includes games such as horseshoes, football toss, basketball throw, darts, shuffleboard, croquet, line dancing, chair aerobics and yoga.

Preschool storytime begins at local library

ADA — Fall storytime for preschoolers (ages 3-5 years) will begin Sept. 16 at Ada Public Library. There will be 11 weekly programs ending Nov. 25. The sessions will meet Tuesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. For more information, phone 436-8122.



Lapsit storytime scheduled at library

Ada Public Library will hold Lapsit Storytime for infants, irth to 24 months, beginning Sept. 24. There will be four weekly programs ending Oct. 21. These sessions will meet Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m. Each session will feature books, action rhymes and interactive play. For more information, phone 436-8122.



Combat Infantry conducts benefit for local man

ADA — Combat Infantry Association is selling tickets for a chance to win a $500 credit card from Wal-Mart. The drawing will be held the last week in October at the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce. Pontotoc County Fair Smokin’ BBQ Contest

It’s a BBQ Throwdown Saturday, Sept. 6 at Pontotoc County Fair’s Third Annual Smokin’ Barbecue Contest. County bragging rights are at stake plus a chance to win cash money.

Registration begins at 1 p.m. in the convention center and all items must be in place by 1:45 p.m., the contest will begin at 2 p.m. Categories include, beef brisket, pork ribs, pork loin, barbecue sauce and cook’s choice. With divisions for both amateur and business/professional, the contest has something for everyone.

Ada Schools provide special ed services

ADA - The Ada Public School District would like to make parents aware of child find opportunities available to all children who are suspected of having a disability and in need of special education and related services.

Special education and related services are provided free of charge to children with disabilities by the child’s district of residence.

Cheerleaders selling retired uniforms

Fall soccer registration under way

ADA — Ada Boys and Girls Club continues registration for Fall Soccer 2008 for boys and girls age 4 and older at Ada Boys and Girls Club fields, 915 S. Hickory. Cost is $55. Registration forms are also available online at www.bgcada.com. Season kicks off Sept. 13. Coaches and referees are needed.



Flag football coaches’ meetings scheduled

ADA – Coaches of teams planning to participate in the 2008 City of Ada Recreation Department flag football league must attend one of three meetings scheduled in August.

The coaches’ meetings are set for Thursday, August 14; Tuesday, August 19; and Thursday, August 21. Each meeting begins promptly at 7 p.m. at the Irving Community Center gymnasium, 704 N. Oak.

City accepting applications for flag football

ADA – For the fourth consecutive season, the City of Ada Recreation Department will manage a non-contact flag football league for youth between first and sixth grades.

Registration is $30 per player. The deadline to register is Friday, August 29. No late applications will be accepted. All players who register will be placed on a team. Draft day is scheduled for Thursday, September 4. Only coaches can be present for the draft.

Applications are available at the Irving Community Center, 704 N. Oak; Ada City Hall, 231 S. Townsend; or at www.adaok.com, on the Parks & Recreation page.

Applications will also be distributed in Ada area schools. It is scheduled to publish in The Ada Evening News on Wednesday, August 20, and Sunday, August 24.

The flag football league is intended for recreation only. No standings are kept. All games are played on Monday and Tuesday at Matthews Softball Park, 601 S. Hickory.

Courthouse closes for primary election runoff

ADA — Pontotoc County Courthouse will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 26, for primary runoff election for County Commissioner District 2. Third-floor courtroom and election board office will remain open.





Adult Learning Center offers GED classes

ADA - The Ada Adult Learning Center is looking for individuals who need a GED but are unable to attend classes due to work schedules, lack of child care or transportation. The AALC has received an Oklahoma State Department of Education grant to offer the GED Online free. Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office fingerprints

ADA — Pontotoc County Sheriff’s Office does ink fingerprinting on Wednesdays by appointment only. The charge is $15 for general applicants such as security clearances, teachers, nurses, employment, etc. Concealed Weapons applicants can also be fingerprinted on Wednesdays (refer to c.w. packet for cost). Ada High class of 1998 to reunite

Lawn clippings collection resumes

ADA – The city of Ada resumed the seasonal collection of bagged lawn clippings. Collection takes place each Wednesday through November, separate from normal garbage service. Residents are asked to place bagged clippings at the curb for pick-up. Clippings are not to be placed in alleys. Raking leaves and grass into the street is not permitted. Big Five Community Services offers “RX for Oklahoma”

ADA — Big Five community Services, Inc. has a prescription assistance program that may allow people to get free or discounted medication. “RX for Oklahoma” is designed to help the elderly and low-income reduce the cost of their medications. To qualify, one must not have any prescription drug coverage or must be able to show that medications are a financial burden. This service is available at no cost. Organic Produce Co-op begins

Area residents interested in better health may find the Organic Produce Co-op helpful. A local organic produce co-op is now forming. CASA accepting applications

ADA — Court Appointed Special Advocate Program (CASA) is now accepting applications for new volunteer training. CASA Advocates are appointed by judges to be the voice for abused and neglected children in court. Advocates get to know the children they serve and gather information from those who might have knowledge regarding the child. This information is given to the court to help determine what is best for the child. Potential volunteers are required to complete an in-depth screening interview, background check, and 30 hours of training and courtroom observation.
