NOV. 17, 2009

• Valley View Regional Hospital and the Chickasaw Nation Healthcare System will host a community Diabetes Support Group meeting at 6:30 p.m. at the Chickasaw Family Life/Wellness Center, 229 W. Seabrook. The topic is “Empowering a Person with Diabetes by Achieving a Healthy Lifestyle,” complete with a presentation by the Wellness Staff and the Get Fresh Program. • Tickets for the Miss Ada 2010 Scholarship Pageant “Dreams Can Come True” which will be 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 23, at Hallie Brown Ford Fine Arts Center on the East Central University campus are on sale. Tickets are $10 each for general admission and $12.50 for reserved seating. Reserve seating tickets are available at Eden Tree Boutique, 900 N. Country Club; general admission tickets are available at Bella E Salon, 1198 North Hills Centre, and J Che Je’s, 115 W. Main Street.

• Byng Excellence in Education Foundation (BEEF) meets at 7 a.m. at J.D.’s Cafe.

• TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) meets at 8:15 a.m. each Tuesday on the second floor of Irving Center, located at the corner of Fourth and Oak streets in Ada. TOPS is a weight support group.

• A reception honoring Dr. C.J. Vires and Dr. Diane Berty will be held at 2 p.m. in the Sterling Williams Foundation and Alumni Center at East Central University. Vires, an associate vice president, will take over the reorganized Office of Research and Advancement which combined his Office of Sponsored Programs and Research with the Office of Advancement. Berty, the vice president for student development, has served as interim vice president for advancement since February 2008.

• Divorce/Bereavement Support Group meets at 7 p.m. at The Compassion Outreach Center, 1124 Cradduck Road. For more information, phone Tom at 332-6506.

• A dance is held every Wednesday at the Irving Community Center, 704 N. Oak, from 7:30-10 p.m. The cost is $6 per person.

THURSDAY

NOV. 19, 2009

• Pontotoc County Retired Educators monthly meeting is Friday at Elks Lodge.  The buffet will begin at 11 a.m.  The program will be the presentation of the PCREA Pioneer Award. 

• The second annual Agencies Giving Back Chili Lunch will be held from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church fellowship hall at Broadway and 14th Streets. Tickets are $5 each and include a drink, chili, homemade corn bread and desserts. All proceeds will benefit Ada Regional United Way.

• Gospel and country music singers Thurman Rinehart, Leon and Deana Barnett, Gene Williams, Robert Turner and Don Brooks will perform for residents of Jan Francis Nursing Home in Ada at 2 p.m.

• Attention Teens and Tweens: Game On at The Library will be held from 3:30-5:30 p.m. upstairs at Ada Public Library. Activities will include video games such as Wii Games, Guitar Hero and more.  

• Ada committee of Ducks Unlimited holds its annual dinner banquet at Ada Elks Lodge. Doors open at 6 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Tickets are $25 for a single, $40 for a couple and $10 for children age 12 and younger. • Area grade school and middle school children will have the opportunity to meet and play games with East Central University athletes from 7-9 p.m. at the LazerZone Family Fun Center in Ada. For $10, each child will receive two slices of pizza, one small drink and unlimited playing of games which include: bowling, lazer tag and mini golf, as well as meeting athletes from all 13 ECU sports and getting their autographs. The night will also feature a live remote from KKFC, FM 105.5.

• The local Alcoholics Anonymous group meets Thursdays at 6:30 p.m. in fellowship hall of First Presbyterian Church, 301 E. Kings Rd. For more information, phone Daniel G. at (580) 332-3503.

• Ada High Performing Arts Class will present “The Wizard of Oz” at 7:30 p.m. in Ada Cougar Activity Center Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for adults (over 18) and $3 for children 3-18. Tickets are available at the door on a general admission basis.

• Pontotoc County Alcoholics Anonymous group meets at 8 p.m. at Central Church of Christ, 820 Stadium Drive, Ada. Open meeting.

• The International Student Connection Club at East Central University will prepare exotic cuisine for an International Dinner at 6 p.m. in the Wagner Ballroom in the Memorial Student Union. The cost is $10, with proceeds benefitting the ECU International Scholarship Fund. Children under 5 eat free.

• The Alternative Gift Market and Ten Thousand Villages will be sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the North Lounge in East Central University’s Memorial Student Union. Alternative Gifts offers opportunities to purchase sponsorships for humanitarian projects in third world countries. Ten Thousand Villages offers handcrafted products from artisans in dozens of countries.

• Al-Anon meets Fridays at 8 p.m. at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church at 17th Street and Broadway in Ada.

• Celebrate Recovery meets each Friday at Grace Community Church in Konawa on SH 99. The program is for anyone with hurts, habits or hangups. From 6-7 p.m., a meal is served for $3; group from 7 to 9 p.m. is free. For more information, phone 580-272-3320 or 925-3545.

• Girl Scouts of Eastern Oklahoma, Aphchi Service Unit, teamed with Oklahoma Blood Institute to encourage healthy area residents to give blood in November. • 3 on 3 Basketball tournament, sponsored by Boys and Girls Club of Ada, will be Nov. 20-22. Cost is $40 per team with a four-person roster. The double elimination tournament for grades 3-8 and age 18 and older is a fund raiser for the Boys and Girls Club building fund.
