It's a wrap

Cougars hold final spring workout on Thursday

Joe Claxton ACS Publications Director

Ada Attitude. Enthusiasm. Fun. With that, eight days of spring practice ended on Thursday for the Ada Cougars.

“Their enthusiasm and attitude was what made it fun. The kids’ attitudes were really good. They are trying their hardest to pick up on what we are doing,” new head coach Matt Weber said.

“We got a lot accomplished. We are looking like a football team, not a Chinese fire drill,” he added.

In the ‘summer belongs to the kids’ scheme, June 16 is the next important date for the Cougars. On that date ‘mandatory’ weightroom work begins, though the Craig McBroom Football Complex will be open for those who wish to lift prior to June 16.

Practice ended Thursday with team drills rushing the football. Tailback and fullback are wide open with plenty of candidates, but little extended experience.

In an offense dominated by the running of quarterback Michael Roberts and tailback Willy Gould, of 426 rushes for 2,210 total yards, only 163 plus 33 yards return. Seniors Keeslar Stover and Aaron Wallace account for those meager numbers, respectively. Stover packed the ball 40 times, third most on the team, and Wallace only six.

Second-year Ada coach Trey Owens is the coach for both positions.

At fullback, Wallace, a junior, leads the way along with seniors Robert Quarterman and Corey Higbee. Rounding out the cast are sophomores Seth Windsor, Cole Higbee and Desmond Ferguson, who doubles in the tailback stable.

Stover is the key returnee at tailback. Topping out at 5-8, 160 (last season’s statistics), Stover is backed by even smaller Justin Todd, a junior, 5-5, 140. Stover was on the sprint relay team in track, Todd a state qualifier in wrestling.

“Both of them are sparkplugs, strong for their size and not afraid to mix it up, run north and south,” Owens said.

Also in the running are junior Jesse Cashman, and sophs Dionte Albert, Ferguson and Adrian Medrano a move-in from Byng who has never played football.
