ARC prepares for waste collection; Club News

Garmon Smith called the meeting to order at 12:05 in the council chambers at city hall on Wednesday, September 9, 2009.

Treasurer’s Report – Glenda DeShazo distributed the treasurer’s report and reported the balance.

Minutes – Trudy Nevland distributed last month’s minutes (which were accepted for the record).

Household Hazardous Waste / E-Waste Collection Event – Trudy Nevland reminded members that the city’s annual HHW event is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ECU’s Norris Field parking lot and asked members to help promote the event via flyers and e-mail.  Some of the items to be collected are  oils, paints, cleaners, solvents, tires, pharmaceuticals, e-waste, and pesticides.  She also reported that e-waste would be collected the week prior to the event at the ICON center.  ARC will once again collect, mix and donate latex paint.

National Recycling Coalition – Garmon Smith reported that Keep America Beautiful (KAB) committed to partnering with the National Recycling Coalition (NRC) in supporting and promoting America Recycles Day this year.  In spite of the recent outcome of the merger vote and NRC’s subsequent announcement of its intent to declare bankruptcy, that agreement with KAB remains in place and ARC has been assured of their commitment to supporting the ARD State Coordinators and state affiliates with the necessary resources to promote the national day of recycling.

America Recycles Day – Members agreed to conduct a poster contest for area elementary students ($25 for the winner in each grade – contest rules same as last year’s) and to conduct a recycling pledge drive to give away another mulching mower in November.

City of Ada Recycling Update – Cardboard is currently bringing $85/ton.

Sports Bottles -- Dana Nickell made a motion that ARC purchase metal sports bottles in bulk for promotional purposes and membership recruitment.  Motion passed unanimously.  Nickell and Nevland formed a committee to select the bottles.

Websites – Kudos to Lisa Sharp for all the work she’s done with getting ARC out on the web.  Members and the public are now able to follow ARC via Twitter, Face Book, MySpace and by blogging, as follows:

Twitter:  Twitter.com/AdaRecycling

MySpace:  http://www.myspace.com/adarecyclingcoalition

Blog:  http://adarecyclingcoalition.blogspot.com

FaceBook:  http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/Ada-Recycling-Coalition/117302651170?ref=ts .

Members were encouraged to add the Ada Recycling Coalition to their personal spaces and to sign up and/or follow ARC via Twitter and blogspot to help promote recycling in Ada.

The meeting was adjourned at 1 p.m.
