How we got here and how the fear came

As I write this, members of our Congress have their heads together and are trying to figure out a way to bailout the financial sector. Lord, have mercy upon us.

COOL record-keeping requirements for producers becoming clearer

Country-of-Origin Labeling (COOL) is a USDA marketing program mandated by the 2002 Farm Bill which requires retailers to notify their customers of the country of origin of beef (including veal), goat meat, lamb, pork, poultry, fish and other perishable agricultural commodities.

Progress 2009: Future Proud

In 1969 Alvin Toffler’s book, “Future Shock,” created much buzz as he made the point that the world was changing so fast it would one day be beyond our capacity to keep up. This, he said, would be in sharp contrast to all of recorded history preceding the modern era.

What does “Being Ready” mean?

What do people mean when they ask us if we are ready? We may hear it at funeral services, and there it seems to be a question about whether or not we have a personal relationship with God that allows us entrance to Heaven when we die.

Words produce fear and trembling

I’ve noticed over time that key words and phrases have a tendency to elicit almost preconditioned responses here in the newsroom. On one hand, words like “payday,” “press pass,” “complimentary lunch” and “exclusive” bring smiles and cheers wherever they’re heard. But on the other hand, words like “shifting deadline,” “over-time” and “Grisham” are generally followed with groans and sobs. There’s one phrase, though, that causes more wailing and teeth-gnashing throughout the AEN building than any other. At the mere mention, freelance writers flee the state. Ad reps go into blind panic, babbling more incoherently than usual. Printers down below shake their fists in fury.

I have not yet written to those of you who watch this space about the death of our dog Buttercup, though it occurred more than three weeks ago as I write this.

Parents who want their preschoolers to eat fruits and vegetable should be prepared to step up to the plate themselves.

Not yet time to run amok

A telephone ringing in the movie “Sea Biscuit” symbolized some dramatic change in store for the movie’s main character, at one point signaling the start of the Great Depression. Whether or not my telephone ringing the other day heralds similar macroeconomic changes is a matter of debate.

Early October weather suitable for cool-season lawn planting, renovation

Early October still affords some great weather for establishing cool-season lawns in most of Oklahoma, but don’t make the mistake of waiting too late into the month.

The Word and the Spirit

I’m not as big a reader as one might expect from the stereotype of a college professor or of a writer. I do read some, but occasionally I will hear a voice that says “Take up and read” and, when I heed it, ,the book will grasp my face and let me turn neither to the left nor the right until I am done, but that is only rare.

Another Birthday?

I will turn thirty-something soon. Again. My children have already asked me what I want for my birthday. This brings to mind two questions: what do I really want, and how much money do I want to spend on my presents?

Remember food safety when preparing jerky from wild game

Whether you are out hunting or hiking in the woods, jerky is a quick snack that many outdoor sports enthusiasts find handy since there is no refrigeration needed for short-term storage.
