Bis-Henn moves money for referees

BY DAVID DELGADO
Commercial-News

BISMARCK Bismarck-Henning school board members approved a measure Monday to increase the revolving fund they use to pay referees. The school participates in many tournaments in December that require extra funding to compensate referees, Superintendent Randy Hird said.

Hird also discussed the tentative 2010 fiscal year tax levy with board members and guests.

“One of the things that we have really been successful at is that we are getting in that extra income with our tax levy every year that a lot of districts quite frankly aren’t,” he said.

Hird said there will be an official hearing next month to discuss the levy and ultimately pass it.

Also Monday the Music Boosters fundraising committee hopes to raise $24,000 for new band uniforms and a trip to Kings Island amusement park for the Music in the Parks competition in May 2010. This will be the second year the school will participate in the event.

Due to the growing number of band and choir members, uniforms have become scarce, so students and committee members are working together to raise money.

“We are really excited,” committee member Linda Johanningsmeier said. “The band is growing, and we’re expecting to see it continue growing.”

Committee president Cheryl Clapp said they have raised about $7,000 through their various fundraisers, which include pie sales, candy sales, car washes, and a spaghetti dinner night.

Students and committee members have organized a Santa Claus breakfast which will take place Nov. 28 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the high school cafeteria Clapp said. Students will be dressed as elves and will serve pancakes to guests. There will be craft areas for children where they can write letters to Santa or make Christmas ornaments. Santa Claus will be in attendance and parents are welcome to bring their cameras. Cost of the event is $6. Children 3 and under are free.

Tickets can be purchased from music students or at the door. For more information contact Cheryl Clapp at 918-1367.

Also, the school will hold its fall blood drive from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in Wilcox Gym.
