Local Roundup: Storm turn away Comets

STAFF REPORT

VILLA GROVE Brock Bodine hit four three-pointers on his way to 14 points to lead Salt Fork past Oakwood, 66-43, to win the championship of the Villa Grove Holiday Tournament.

Jon Knoll also had 14 points for Salt Fork and Joel Learnard added nine points in a game that was missing an important piece for Oakwood.

Oakwood star and leading scorer Justin Jones sat out the game with a leg injury, and Salt Fork rebounded from a slow start to beat the out-manned Comets.

“We came out kind of slow, maybe because they were missing their star, but after that we played really well for the last three quarters,” said Salt Fork Head Coach Aaron Hird.

The win moves Salt Fork to 4-0 to start the year, and they will be hosts to St. Joseph-Ogden on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

CPCI 51

A-P 46

PAXTON — Armstrong-Potomac was in Paxton to play in the seventh place game of the Interstate Classic on Saturday, and fell in a close game to Cissna Park-Crecent-Iroquois.

Matt Carter led the Trojans with 18 points, Zack Franzen had 10, and Tyler Farmer added nine, but they could not overcome a ten-point halftime deficit against the Timberwolves.

Armstrong-Potomac will not have to wait long for a rematch, as the Trojans will travel to Cissna Park on Tuesday for a scheduled game with CPCI.

Fisher 38

Hoopeston Area 27

HOOPESTON — Fisher outscored Hoopeston Area 15-6 in the fourth quarter to salt away a tough game at the Cornjerker Classic.

Brock Baker had nine points and Jordan Flint had eight points for Hoopeston Area in the loss to wrap up play in the Classic.

Hoopeston Area will be on the road to face Paxton-Buckley-Loda on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Iroquois West 58

Milford 46

HOOPESTON — Iroquois West drained eight three-pointers on their way to a win over Milford on Saturday in the Cornjerker Classic.

Justin Garrelts had a game-high 21 points for the Bearcats, but they were behind 26-9 after the first quarter and could not rally to get the deficit under ten points for the rest of the game.

Donovan 84

Milford 57

HOOPESTON — Donovan hit four three-pointers in the first quarter to get a 25-10 lead, and Milford was unable to recover, dropping their second game of the day in the Cornjerker Classic.

Ryan Kunce had 18 points, Calvin Van Hoveln had 11 points, and Justin Garrelts had 10 points in the game for the Bearcats, but Donovan put out a balanced attack with five players scoring in double figures, and it was just too much for Milford to handle.

Milford will travel to face Clifton Central on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Jaguars take title at Joliet tournament

JOLIET — Danville Area Community College won the Joliet Holiday Tournament, beating the host team from Joliet Junior College 70-57.

Former Danville High School star Chelsey Miller scored 19 points and had eight rebounds in the championship game, helping her win the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award.

Abby Kinder had 11 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and Megan Couch added seven points and was named to the all-tournament team along with Miller.

The Jaguars will be back at home on Wednesday when they host Lincoln Trail at 5:30 p.m.
