Seeing well and looking good

Many years ago I had a neighbor who was one of the most beautiful women I ever knew and she was, undoubtedly, the vainest female I ever met. Her favorite ploy for a compliment was, “So and So is younger than I am but she has a lot more lines on her face than I do, don’t you think?” One day, disgusted with having reassured her of her youthful appearance too many times, I gently said, “ I think nature is very kind to us. When we get a bunch of wrinkles, our eyesight dims a little and we never know just how old we really look.”

Christmas reveals unknown strengths, weaknesses

Christmas gift-giving indicates a lot of things about people, and in my family, it reveals some character flaws that were heretofore not apparent. Sneakiness, failure to keep promises are only two such faults that have surfaced.
