Texas High School Football Playoff Pairings

The Corsicana Tigers take on West Mesquite in a first-round playoff game on Friday. Mildred, Kerens and Dawson are also in the postseason. Here are the Texas High School Football playoff pairings:....more>>

  • Bulldogs football: Rematch is set
Rod Serling must of have passed through Corsicana during the heyday of the Twilight Zone, because the remnants of his visit lingers around the Navarro College football team.

  • Point After: Cutrers come full circle with win over Cleburne
Fate came in the form of a coin. Resting on the south side home parking lot at Tiger Stadium this past Wednesday was a quarter dated 1982. Call it cornball, but upon my discovery I thought the Tigers were a lock to win Friday’s game.

  • Area Schedule
Here's a look at the Area Sports Schedule:

  • HS cross country: Wortham frosh takes 2nd at meet
Wortham freshman Amber Libhart didn’t feel like her conditioning was at its best for Saturday's regional cross country meet.
    It didn’t matter.

  • HS cross country: Blooming Grove, Mildred runners make it to state
Blooming Grove junior Zeb Thomas and Mildred junior Ben Knight are going to the UIL State Cross Country Meet.
Thomas took ninth and Knight came in 10th place at the Class 2A Region II Meet on Saturday in Arlington. Thomas had a time of 16:58.08 and Knight a time of 17:07.37 over the three-mile course at Vandergriff Park.

  • Golden Circle Standings, Schedules, Leaders
Here's a glance at the Golden Circle Standings, Schedules and Leaders at the end of the regular season:

  • HS volleyball playoffs: First game loss foils Hubbard
It took three games for Cross Roads to eliminate Hubbard from the Class 1A volleyball playoffs Saturday.
But the area-round match at Tiger Gym came down to the first game.

  • UPDATE Navarro beats Kilgore, 24-10
    Navarro beats Kilgore, 24-10

  • Mildred's Knight going to state in cross country
Mildred’s Ben Knight is going to the UIL State Cross Country Meet.
Knight finished in 10th place at the Class 2A Region II Meet on Saturday in Arlington.

  • Mildred stuffs Rice, 38-7
A pair of Daniels paced Mildred as it won at Rice, beating the Bulldogs for the eighth time in eight meetings. Daniel Folsom ran for 135 yards and three touchdowns, and Daniel Donoho had 92 total yards and two more scores as the Eagles won, 38-7, to claim a share of the District 14-2A title.

  • Malakoff gets by rival Kerens, 23-16
The Malakoff Tigers snapped a 17 year losing streak to the Kerens Bobcats in physical-hard-fought style Friday night in a convincing 23-16 victory at Tiger field.

  • Blooming Grove finishes with 41-31 win
The Difference: The Lions forced five Scurry-Rosser turnovers. In the 3rd Quarter, the Lions defense led by FS Matt Bayer, LB Dalton Leopard, LB Gage Anderson, and S Michael Lunceford pressurized Wildcat QB Seth Farmer, had an interception, and recovered two fumbles – including a fumble return for a touchdown.

  • Hubbard knocks off Wortham, 32-27
The difference: Big plays for touchdowns. Hubbard reached the end zone five times with two of the touchdowns coming off large gains. Lance McClain broke free for a 69 yard touchdown run and he passed to John Jones for a 59 yard touchdown. Both touchdowns came in the second quarter.

  • Tigers are back in playoffs
Boot camp. Accountability to your teammates. Wearing blue blazers to school on game day.
Buying into new coach Phil Castles and his way of doing things paid off for the Corsicana Tigers on Friday night.

  • Dawson makes it a perfect run, 34-8 over Axtell
Dawson ran for 425 yards as it completed its perfect run through 21-1A.

  • Friday Night Spotlight: Head to Head
Jake Jones and Lance McClain are well aware of exactly how much yardage separates them in the race for the Golden Circle rushing title.
    22 yards.

  • Golden Circle gameday
Here's a look at Friday's Golden Circle Gameday:

  • Dawson’s ability to deal with adversity keys 21-1A title run
DAWSON — A week ago the Dawson Bulldogs earned the District 21-1A title with a gutsy, inspired, comeback victory over Italy, a game dubbed around the Daily Sun as the Mud Bowl.

  • Staying the course
Bryant Jackson was going to play quarterback for his Pee Wee football team, and instead wound up on the offensive line.
He’ll start at right tackle on Friday night in Corsicana’s must-win game against Cleburne at Tiger Stadium, most likely the final home game for him and his senior teammates.

  • Navarro Basketball: Runnin' Bulldogs whip Redlands, 97-75
Matt Pressey scored 24 points and Greg Allen added 20 as the No.8 Navarro Runnin’ Bulldogs won their first road game of the season, routing Redlands (Okla.) Community College, 97-75, on Thursday night in El Reno, Okla.

  • Rice’s Keith White at head of his class
RICE — Rice center and middle linebacker Keith White goes out every Friday night trying to win his individual battle with the player opposing him.
It doesn’t stop for him during the week.

  • High School Volleyball: Wortham loses in playoffs to Milano in 3
The Wortham Lady Bulldogs lost in 3 games to Milano, 25-17, 25-16, 25-18 in a Class A Area Round playoff game in Bremond on Thursday night.

  • Navarro’s Bobeck sweating the little things
You didn’t notice it unless you were paying very close attention, or unless you are a driven perfectionist like Nick Bobeck.

  • Tiger Football: All on the line
If you’re wondering what to expect Friday night when the Tigers and Cleburne square off for one of the two undecided playoff spots in 16-4A, here’s all you need to know:
Of Corsicana’s six district games this season, five of them have been decided by 10 points or less.

  • Rice looks to spoil Mildred’s magical run
Rice coach David Currey hasn’t had to say much to get his team fired up to play Mildred in Friday’s regular season finale at Bulldog Stadium.

  • Navarro can’t take Kilgore for granted
Forty-five minutes after Kilgore’s 42-17 loss to Navarro in September, its players were grouped by position across R.E. St. John Stadium.
Some were on one knee, others had helmets in hand and their heads down. In the middle of each group was a very animated coach.

Mildred’s rush toward a playoff berth, maybe even a district title, began with thoughts of change after a poor overall performance on a damp field in Wortham.

  • Navarro hoops: Runnin' Bulldogs celebrate with rout
Navarro celebrated last year’s Region XIV championship and first trip to the NJCAA national tournament on Tuesday night with a ring ceremony.
They also opened the new season with a ringing effort.

  • GC Football Notebook: Faulk expected to play
Kerens should have its full arsenal of players Friday in its rivalry game against Malakoff.
    That includes quarterback Pat Faulk.

  • Tigers in the NFL
Here's how the ex-Corsicana Tigers did in their NFL games last weekend:

  • Wortham opens playoffs with roller coaster win
RICE — The Wortham Lady Bulldogs have stressed teamwork all season, trying to blend their roster together under new coach Kim Fisher.
It paid off for them in Tuesday night’s playoff opener against Milford.

  • Navarro new No. 1 in football; title tilt may be on a Sunday
As expected, the Navarro Bulldogs (9-0) became the new No. 1 team in the NJCCA poll released Tuesday. Surprisingly, Navarro did not receive all seven first place votes as Blinn (8-1), the former No. 1 until a loss to the Bulldogs last week, had been getting
