Charlson fires 74 Monday at Super Regional

AUSTIN, Texas — East Central University sophomore golfer Matt Charlson shot a 3-over-par 74 and was tied for 18th place after the first round of the NCAA Division II South Central Super Regional Monday at the par-71 Grey Rock Golf Course.

Charlson, who is tied with six others, was at plus-one through 13 holes before finishing with an up-and-down final five holes. He hooked his second shot left into the trees and settled for bogey on the par-5 No. 14 hole. He then birdied the par-4 15th hole and had a par on 16.

However, a double-bogey on 17, followed by a par on 18 forced him to settle for 3-over at the conclusion of the round.

Six players were under-par as three - Andrew Workman and Collin Meyer, both of St. Edward’s and Cameron’s Peter Svajlen, fired a 2-under 69. SEU’s Matthew Hatcher and Jeff Howard, along with Cameron’s Cane Shumaker each shot a 1-under 70.

The second round of the regional tournament is set for Tuesday, followed by the third and final round on Wednesday.
