Windy way of life

Judd Morse Staff Writer

Tornados are an unfortunate fact of life for many throughout the midwest, particularly those living in Oklahoma. Oklahoma is notorious for its ample supply of tornados, especially in the spring and early summer months. According to Norman’s National Weather Service Forecast Office, over 3,100 tornados have been reported in the state since 1950. On May 3, 1999, 66 tornados broke out in Oklahoma and Kansas, causing over $1 billion in damage.

Last weekend several tornados tore through Pittsburg County and the McAlester area. To the northeast, one twister cut a devastating swath through the town of Picher, leaving seven dead. Residents said almost no forewarning was given to signal the storm’s deadly arrival.

Part of living in Oklahoma is remembering that tornados are a very real danger. It’s therefore essential to have a plan, should things get ugly. Storm shelters are great if a person can get to them, but what if one’s not available? What if the sirens go off when people are shopping for groceries or watching a movie?

Having a contingency plan for taking shelter in case of severe weather is just a smart thing to do. Know your surroundings, find out where the best places are around town to take shelter if things get unexpectedly ugly outside. And make sure family members are also aware of the best places to go should the worst happen.
