Resident councils

in long-term care

Across the country, residents of nursing homes and other long-term care facilities honored the individual rights of residents by celebrating National Residents’ Rights Week during the month of October. The week highlighted the importance of listening to the residents who live in LTC facilities with the theme “Hear Our Voice.” The 1987 Nursing Home Reform Act guarantees residents a number of important rights to enhance their nursing home experience and improve facility-wide services and conditions. Key among these rights is the right to form and hold regular private meetings of an organized group called a Resident Council. The Resident Council is a vehicle to bring about positive changes for all residents in the facility.

As advocates for residents, the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program of Areawide Aging Agency is available to assist resident council members residing in nursing homes and assisted living buildings in Canadian, Cleveland, Logan and Oklahoma counties in exercising this important right of self-advocacy and empowerment of the individual resident. Need assistance? Call 942-8500 to speak to an ombudsman.
