Adom leads Bronchos past East Central
Zuela Adom continued her recent surge and Central Oklahoma avenged an earlier loss to East Central with a three-set sweep Tuesday night at Hamilton Field House.
Adom, who was named Lone Star Conference Hitter of the Week earlier in the day, hit .306 with a match-high 17 kills while adding six digs, two service aces and two blocks to spark the Bronchos to 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 triumph.
UCO, which dropped a five-set decision to the Tigers a month ago in the league meeting between the teams, improved to 13-15 in the opener of a season-ending four-match homestand. The Bronchos resume conference play Thursday, hosting Southwestern Oklahoma at 7 p.m.
“Unfortunately it wasn’t a conference match, but it was still a good win for us,” UCO coach Jeff Boyland said. “We played pretty solid and came up with some big points at the end in all three sets.”
The Bronchos also got 10 kills and 10 digs from Kristen Wilson, with Morgan Roy adding six kills and Courtney Whitlow four kills and two blocks.
UCO led all the way in the first set, but the Tigers trailed just 23-22 before the Bronchos finished it off with back-to-back kills by Adom and Wilson.
UCO overcame an 11-6 deficit in the second set, taking its first lead at 17-16 on a block by Wilson and Whitlow. It went back-and-forth until Wilson’s kill put the Bronchos in front to stay at 22-21, with an ECU error, Carly LeMay dump at the net and an Adom kill down the line ending it.
The third set was another battle, with UCO taking an early 6-2 lead before the Tigers came back to go in front 18-15. The Bronchos came back with another surge down the stretch, breaking a 23-23 tie with kills by Adom and Wilson to close out the match.
