Bulldogs fall at Jenks

For three quarters, the glass slipper fit. Edmond Memorial had top-ranked Jenks on the ropes heading into the final 12 minutes of the season. But that’s when the Trojans showed why they have a dozen gold balls in their trophy case.....more>>

  • North, Memorial swim past Putnam City North
The Edmond swimming teams spread the victories around Thursday night as all three schools took on Putnam City North at the Oklahoma Christian University pool. Both Memorial and North took easy victories, while Santa Fe lost to the Panthers.

  • Santa Fe ready for next step
The Edmond Santa Fe wrestlers spent most of last season on the cusp. A break here or there would have made all the difference for the Wolves, who were shut out of the state tournament last season. And while head coach Tim Draper doesn’t believe his team has the makings of a state contender this year, he’s confident they’re headed in the right direction.

  • Crowd control
Santa Fe head coach Bruce Gowen knows what No. 9-ranked Memorial is up against tonight when they hit the road to take on No. 1 Jenks in the state quarterfinals.

  • 'Dogs have plenty of upside
There is a different tone in the Edmond Memorial wrestling room this year. While many of the faces are the same on the Bulldogs’ roster, head coach Darren Huff promises much different results this year.

  • Eagles prepare for NAIA Cross Country Championships
OKLAHOMA CITY — The Oklahoma Christian University mens’ cross country team, along with two individual women qualifiers, will head to Vancouver, Wash. for the NAIA National Cross Country Championships on Saturday.

  • Funny name, serious playmaker
Travel to any Edmond Memorial road game and you’re sure to notice it. Blaring from the stadium speakers, a public address announcer can be heard as he hesitantly spits out some variation of the name Jordan Marczewski, after the senior makes his first play of the game. But it won’t be the last time. By the end of the night the man in booth usually has it right or gives up trying to keep up with the two-way standout.

  • Antlers have big shoes to fill
Andy Howington won’t lie, his Deer Creek wrestling team has some work to do this season. The Antlers lost several key members from last year’s squad that placed third at state, including a pair of state champions in Cade Draper and Hunter Muskrat. While those losses hurt, the Deer Creek head coach is confident his squad has plenty of talent coming up.

  • North tops defending state champion Bixby
The Edmond North swimming teams went into hostile territory Tuesday night and came away with impressive road victories over Bixby. The Lady Huskies dominated in their meet, winning 101-59, while the North boys had to come from behind before using their depth to win 101-74 over the defending Class 5A champs.

  • Kropp transfers to OU
Former Edmond North golfer Will Kropp has transferred from the Georgia to the University of Oklahoma.

  • North ready to contend for title
It’d be hard to call last season a disappointment for the Edmond North wrestling team. The Huskies made a long awaited return to dual state and sent nearly half of their squad to the state championships, but had little to show for it. North was knocked out in the first round of dual state by eventual state champion Ponca City and produced only one state placer with Ryan Hanson finishing third at 189.

  • 'Dogs silence critics with win
The Edmond Memorial football team heard the hype all week, but they didn’t believe a word of it. And on Friday night, the critics were left speechless as the Bulldogs demolished No. 6-ranked Mustang with a 38-7 win in the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs at Wantland Stadium.
“We made a huge statement tonight, they came in pretty confident and we showed them what we could do,” Memorial senior running back D’Juan Brooks.

  • Oklahoma boys beat Arkansas
With the state cross country meet in the rearview mirror, several local boys laced up their running shoes one more time for the Arkansas-Oklahoma All-Star Meet Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark. Edmond North’s Adam Godwin paced the local group with an 18th-place finish as the Oklahoma boys came out on top in the annual border war.

  • No. 18 Bronchos knock off Hornets 116-114 in double OT
Sophomore guard Shane Carroll scored 14-points in the first five minutes of the second half, as No. 18 Central Oklahoma erased a 11-point halftime deficit in knocking off Emporia State 116-114 in double overtime on Monday night at Hamilton Fieldhouse.
Both teams were paced by outstanding three-point shooter’s. ESU’s Tim Niles scored a game-high 45 points, as the senior guard was 8-of-8 from behind the arc. At one point late in regulation, Niles had scored 17 straight points for the Hornets.
Carroll was 8-of-9 for the Bronchos, and scored a team-high 33 points, which topped his career-high of 18 points. UCO’s Tyler Phillips was 5-of-11 from three-point range and scored 21 points and led the Bronchos with seven rebounds.
And it was Phillips that carried the Bronchos in the second overtime.

  • Lady Eagles rout Hillsdale, 86-51
The Oklahoma Christian University women didn’t have to wait long to rebound from Saturday’s disappointing loss to Southwestern Assemblies of God. The Lady Eagles (3-1) took out that frustration on Hillsdale Baptist College Monday night as they leveled the winless Saints for an 86-51 win at the Eagles’ Nest.
“It was good to get that game under our belt after a frustrating loss on Saturday where nothing seemed to go right,” OC coach Stephanie Findley said. “Tonight the shots were falling and we were executing better.”

  • Oklahoma Christian pounds Hillsdale Baptist, 86-45
With the start of conference play fast approaching, the Oklahoma Christian University men used Monday’s contest with Hillsdale Baptist as refresher course. The Eagles taught their guests a thing or two as they rolled to a 86-45 win at the Eagles’ Nest.
Devan White has earned high praise from head coach Dan Hays since stepping foot on campus and he showed why on Monday night. The redshirt freshman came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points and was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range.

  • SPRUILL: 'Dogs end 15-year drought
It was a scene that was 15 years in the making. After getting to the playoffs for the third straight season, Edmond Memorial finally got the monkey off its back, and did so in a big way, knocking off No. 6-ranked Mustang 38-7 at Wantland Stadium on Friday night.
And in the middle of it all, Memorial athletic director Mike De la Garza was enjoying every second of it.

  • North falls to Lawton 34-16
Edmond North’s hopes a deep playoff run came to a halt Friday night as they were knocked out in the first round with a 34-16 loss to Lawton before a lively crowd at Cameron Stadium.

  • OBA grounds Saints, wins 7-0
ENID — Oklahoma Bible Academy celebrated a few firsts Friday night at Commitment Field.
First playoff appearance. First home playoff game.First 10-win season.

  • Guthrie knocks off No. 9-ranked Duncan, 20-12
DUNCAN — The Guthrie defensive front earned its keep Friday night, sacking Duncan quarterback Brandon Wilson seven times and holding the Class 5A leading rushing attack to 47 yards rushing in a 20-12 win in the first round of the Class 5A state playoffs.

  • Huskies looking for upset in Lawton
Edmond North head coach Jeremy Dombek has a lot of things to be happy about as his team heads down to No. 8 Lawton tonight for the first round of the state playoffs.

  • Saints hoping experience pays off against OBA
It’s always been about the playoffs at Oklahoma Christian School. It is why they scheduled Sulphur in their lone non-district contest.
They did it so they would be prepared for November.
“Playing a team like Sulphur definitely makes a difference this time of year,” OCS head coach Derek Turner said. “It’s games like that, that give you confidence, because you know that you are prepared physically to take on anybody you are going to face later on down the road. Sulphur is about as physical as anyone in the state.”

  • Byford follows in brothers footsteps
Colton Byford remembers the glory days of Edmond North football. As ball boy he had a front row seat as his older brother Blake guided the Huskies to their most successful season in school history. Colton knew eventually that’d be him pushing North deep into the playoffs, but that day seemed like it’d never come.

  • NEW VIDEO Coach's Corner — North High School
On this week's Coach's Corner, Edmond North coach Jeremy Dombek talks about last week's win over Westmoore, offensive injuries and previews Friday night's playoff matchup with Lawton. The Huskies and Wolverines will get underway 7:30 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.

  • NEW VIDEO Coach's Corner — Memorial High School
On this week's Coach's Corner, Edmond Memorial coach Justin Merideth talks about the Bulldogs strong regular season finale against Putnam City, the return of senior running back D'Juan Brooks and previews Friday night's playoff matchup with Mustang. The Bulldogs and Broncos will get underway 7:30 p.m. at Wantland Stadium.

  • ‘Dogs ready for high-powered Mustang offense
The Edmond Memorial defense hasn’t let anyone off easy this season. The unit is again among the toughest in Class 6A and they appear to only be getting stronger. The No. 9-ranked Bulldogs have held their opponents scoreless for the past two and a half games, but will be in for their toughest challenge of the year tomorrow night as they welcome No. 6 Mustang for the first round of the Class 6A state playoffs.

  • Memorial’s Will power
Justin Merideth knows he’s lucky. While many teams roll the dice on extra points, the Edmond Memorial coach doesn’t even flinch when sending out the kicking team for long field goals. With Will Conant on his side, there’s no need to.
“Will is an outstanding kicker,” Merideth said. “That takes a lot of pressure off of our offense to know that if you get to around the 30 that you don’t have to go for it on fourth down.”

  • Santa Fe swimmers off to red-hot start
The Edmond Santa Fe girls and boys swimming teams opened their season with impressive wins over Ponca City and Shawnee Tuesday night at the Northern Oklahoma College pool in Tonkawa. The girls defeated Ponca City 93-55 and Shawnee 93-11, while the boys beat Ponca City 78-50 and Shawnee 78-36.

  • Tough road awaits Memorial, North and Oklahoma Christian School
Four out of five is not bad, and that’s what football teams in Edmond did last week with Memorial, North, Oklahoma Christian Academy, Oklahoma Christian School and Santa Fe, each picking up wins.

  • Lady Eagles shake up offense in '09
Stephanie Findley had kicked around the idea of switching up the offense for years, but could never pull the trigger. This year she knew the Oklahoma Christian University women were ready for it.

  • Bulldogs sink Pirates with 15-0 road win
WARR ACRES — There was nothing at stake for Edmond Memorial on Friday night, but apparently they didn’t get the message. The Memorial defense pitched their second straight shutout and D’Juan Brooks ran all over Putnam City as the Bulldogs (7-3, 6-1) closed out the regular season with a 15-0 win at Putnam City Stadium.

  • North posts shutout against Jaguars
The Edmond North Huskies were looking to gain some momentum going into the playoffs next week and they got it in a big way Friday night, crushing the Westmoore Jaguars 43-0 at Wantland stadium on Senior night.

  • Mac tops Antlers 48-30
LAWTON — The season ends but the future is bright.
That's what Deer Creek head coach Grant Gower relayed after the Antlers fell on Friday night, 48-30, to the Lawton MacArthur Highlanders in Cameron Stadium.

  • OCS defense crushes Luther
LUTHER — Jack Warren passed for five touchdowns while Jeff Smith rushed for three more, as No. 9-ranked Oklahoma Christian School pounded Luther 55-7 to wrap up third place in District A-2 on Friday night.

  • Eagles end the season with a win
The Oklahoma Christian Academy football closed out their season in style on Friday night, beating Bowlegs 42-22 for their third win of the season.

  • Santa Fe routs Moore in season finale 34-14
Brian Mills would have much rather been trying to figure out who Edmond Santa Fe would be playing next week. But with hopes of the playoffs long gone, Mills and his teammates still went out swinging. The Wolves went out on top, beating Moore 34-14 in their final game of the season Thursday night at Wantland Stadium.
“It’s a great feeling, we just decided to put all the mess aside, put all the past behind us and just play football and play for each other,” Mills said.

  • Huskies hope to get back on track against Jaguars
With third place in the district wrapped up the Edmond North football team looks to build some momentum tonight as they face Westmoore, before entering the playoffs next week.
The Huskies (7-2, 4-2) will be trying to rebound from an emotional loss to Memorial last week. And they should receive a big boost with offensive lineman Tyler Goodrich back.

  • Bulldogs look to work out kinks in final game
The Edmond Memorial football team already knows where they’ll be when the playoffs get underway next week, but Justin Merideth doesn’t want it to play like it. Last week the No. 9-ranked Bulldogs (6-3, 5-1) locked up second place in District 6A-2 and the right to host a first-round playoff game when they topped rival North 10-0. Tonight they’ll wrap up the regular season with road trip to Putnam City.
“We want our players to focus on winning this week and getting ready for the playoffs,” the first-year head coach said.

  • Down but not out
In 26 years of coaching Deer Creek head coach Grant Gower has never seen one team affected by so many injuries. 14 players, including 10 starters are out for tonight’s contest at Lawton MacArthur.
And there’s another thing that will be missing in Lawton tonight, which is excuses. You won’t hear them from Gower, and you won’t hear them from the Antlers, either.

  • NEW VIDEO Coach's Corner — Memorial High School
On this week's Coach's Corner, Edmond Memorial coach Justin Merideth talks about the play of the Bulldog defense in last week's win over Edmond North, quarterback Kameron Doolittle and looks ahead to Friday's regular season finale against Putnam City. The Bulldogs and Pirates will get underway 7:30 p.m. at Putnam City Stadium.

On this week's Coach's Corner, Edmond North coach Jeremy Dombek talks about last week's loss to Memorial, the play of the Husky defense, key injuries on offense and previews Friday night's regular season finale against Westmoore. The Huskies and Jaguars will get underway 7:30 p.m. at Wantland Stadium.

  • NEW VIDEO Coach's Corner — Santa Fe High School
On this week's Coach's Corner, Edmond Santa Fe coach Bruce Gowen talks about last week's win over Norman North, the play of senior quarterback Will Long and previews tonight's season final against Moore. The Wolves and Lions will get underway 7:30 p.m. at Wantland Stadium.

  • OCA ready for final test with Bowlegs
Finishing sixth in district might not seem like much of goal for many high school football teams, but it would be a huge step for Oklahoma Christian Academy. After recording just one victory in their first season of OSSAA football, the Eagles (2-7, 2-5) can take that next step Friday night when they head to Bowlegs for the season finale.

  • Wolves hoping to end season on a winning note
While things haven’t gone quite the way the Edmond Santa Fe football would have liked, they’re making the best of it. Last week the Wolves (2-7, 1-5) proved a five-game losing streak wasn’t enough to keep them down, as they knocked Norman North out of playoff contention with a 24-7 win. And they will look to keep that momentum up as they host Moore in their season finale.

  • Saints not overlooking Luther
It wasn’t that long ago when teams looked at their schedule and saw the Luther Lions as an easy win. Sure, they always had an incredible athlete — Ben and Josh Birmingham, both currently at Central Oklahoma starred there over the years — but rarely a collection of talent.

  • No shortage of talent for Edmond swim teams
Fielding competitive swimming teams shouldn’t be a problem for Steve Riggs this season. The longtime Edmond swim coach has never had so many swimmers to choose from as more than 120 kids have filled the rosters for the upcoming high school season.

  • Perfect season ends with gold for Lady Huskies
The Edmond North girls have set the pace for the state all season long and they had no trouble doing it for one more day. After barely missing out a year ago, the Lady Huskies came through with their second state title in the last three years as they edged Westmoore for the Class 6A girls crown Saturday afternoon at Mitch Park.

  • Broken Arrow edges North boys for 6A crown
Kent Douglas thought his team had as good of shot as any at the wide open Class 6A boys’ state cross country meet. But the Edmond North boys came up a bit short as Broken Arrow pulled out a stunning state title.

  • Antlers grab Buck-to-Buck titles
Taler Buck knows all about the tradition at Deer Creek. He’d heard all about Adam Young leading the Antlers to a state title two years ago, and saw his brother Dakota win it all last fall. This year it was his turn.

  • Deer Creek girls take fifth at state
David Riden believed his Deer Creek girls could be a top five team, and they proved it Saturday afternoon. Senior Hillarie Kessler finished 11th overall to lead the Lady Antlers to a fifth-place finish at the Class 5A girls’ state cross country meet at Mitch Park.
