HARRISON : Edmond softball players are catching on quick

Edmond has been known as hot bed for a number of spots including softball. But that reputation on the diamond appeared to have slipped a bit the past couple of seasons. Edmond Santa Fe was the city’s lone representative at the state tournament in 2007, and last fall the area teams were shut out of the ASA Softball Complex.

But that talent pool appears deeper than ever with a talented group of underclassmen making a splash this fall.

Nowhere is that youth movement more alive than North, which has opened the year 8-3 thanks to some talented freshmen.

After having to press position players into service last year, North head coach Rick Nordyke has plenty of options in the circle. The top two have been freshmen Kadie Messner and Jordan Dixon, who have kept the Lady Huskies in about every game this fall.

The North offense has also seen a boost this year with the help of freshman Abby Taliaferro and sophomore Kady Self, who is becoming one Class 6A’s most dangerous hitters.

Before the season started Memorial head coach Janet Chartney was raving about her four freshmen, and it’s easy to see why. Caitlyn Albro, Lindsay Littles and Shelbie Smith have shown they can be everyday players, while Haley Squier is developing into a reliable arm the Lady Bulldogs (11-1) desperately needed this fall.

Things are a little different for No. 4-ranked Santa Fe. Head coach Rhonda Lawson relies on a great group of upperclassmen, but has still impressed with some of her young players.

Sophomore pitcher Maddie Martin saw some action last year, but has seen her playing time increase this season. And Martin has made the most of her opportunities as she continues to develop into a solid number two pitcher alongside senior Sierra Bronkey.

Freshman infielder Breezy McComas also caught Lawson’s eye this summer and has been a regular in the Lady Wolves’ infield.

Deer Creek has not enjoyed as much success as the three Edmond schools, but the future still looks bright for the 5A squad. The team has several talented young players including freshmen Haley Wells and Shae Boyd, who are learning the ropes from their senior teammates.
