SPRUILL: Edmond recovering from split

Things are shaping up for another great football season for local teams.

As it stands, Edmond still has two undefeated teams in Edmond North and Oklahoma Christian School. And there are signs the big three have reached a near full recovery from the spit.

“I think you’re starting to see it,” Edmond North head coach Jeremy Dombek said before the season started. “The talent here is so much better than what it was when I got here just a couple of years ago. That first senior class was an incredible group of guys, and they did make the playoffs, but the talent now is so much better.”

“For some reason or another, Santa Fe has always had a lot of talent. But you are starting to see the same type of talent at North and Memorial, and it’s only going to get better in the years to come.”

Memorial’s Kameron Doolittle is one of the highest regarded players in the junior class. Linebacker Adrian Shoecraft is one of the best this season. North’s Xavier Smith has already committed to Missouri, while Qua’Don Henderson and Joe Aska are right there. North’s Jared Benway is a big-time talent that will likely be playing on Saturdays. Santa Fe has put its share of players in Division I football, and now they are not alone in that category.

Big-time talent isn’t restricted to just the three Edmond schools.

Deer Creek (1-1) has loads of talent upfront with Garrett Sullivan and Cale Coshow. OCS has Jeff Levy and Jeff Smith, and Oklahoma Christian Academy has Parker Randell, who has rushed for 430 yards and six scores in two weeks, while averaging over 10 yards a carry. Ridiculous.

For the first time in two weeks are teams will be on the road this week, with Memorial being the only home team. The Bulldogs matchup against Del City will be one of the state’s most intriguing games. The Eagles (2-0) are currently ranked No. 8 in the latest AP Poll.

Santa Fe is still winless after a couple of close losses to its inner-city rivals, but things should get better with Putnam City West up next.

North has a good chance at staying unbeaten as it travels to Yukon, though the Millers are much improved. OCS should do the same as it travels to Christian Heritage.
