HARRISON: Local teams draw favorable regional assignments

Jeff Harrison
The Edmond Sun

With the end of the regular season fast approaching, local softball teams are turning their attention towards next week’s regional tournaments. While Edmond Santa Fe is the only squad that will be at home next week, all four teams have a legitimate shot at state.

The No. 6-ranked Lady Wolves, who looked to be on the bubble as a regional host earlier this year, sealed the deal with an impressive showing last week. Santa Fe not only pulled out a pair of Edlam wins, but also ran through the Yukon Tournament, beating Lawton MacArthur in the title game.

Santa Fe’s only real competition in the regional will come from Midwest City, which has posted wins against Broken Arrow, Owasso, Moore and Memorial this season. Also in the Lady Wolves’ regional is Del City and Southmoore.

North may have been the odd team out when host assignments were dolled out, but the Lady Huskies can’t be upset with their draw. North has been playing some of their best softball late in the year, and has a good shot to win their regional tournament in Jenks.

The No. 9 Lady Huskies haven’t faced the No. 8 Trojans or Stillwater, but took both meetings against Putnam City.

The toughest draw in Edmond belongs to No. 11 Memorial, which has to travel to Moore for the second year in a row.

The Lady ‘Dogs shouldn’t have any trouble with Lawton and Lawton Eisenhower, but have had a tough time with the No. 4 Lions. Moore swept Memorial in their only meeting this year, taking the doubleheader 6-0 and 19-0 on Monday.

In Class 5A the Deer Creek girls are feeling pretty good about their regional assignment in El Reno. The Lady Antlers beat the No. 7 Indians twice in the last week and a half and also topped Guthrie in their only meeting of the year.

Deer Creek closes out conference play tonight against Shawnee, and will wrap up the regular season with a grueling schedule in the Tulsa Festival that should have them ready for regionals. The Lady Antlers meet up with Class 6A’s No. 13 Bixby and three top 10 teams in 5A with Skiatook, Cowta and Pryor.
