Local students to compete in state music festival

ADA — Winners of the District VI Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs’ Festival will perform and compete statewide on Saturday, April 25 at Southern Nazarene University, Cantrell Hall at 9 a.m. in Bethany.

The winners competed in Ada on the ECU campus Saturday, March 7.

Winner in the Lower-Primary Division was pianist, Thaddaeus McClain (student of W.T. Skye Garcia) from Ada. The first alternate was Lanie Hand (student of Rebecca Clary) from Tishomingo, and second alternate was Kithany Nichols (student of Starla Hibler) from Ada. Brad Hetherington (student of Lynda Williams) won the Upper-Primary Piano Solo Division. First alternate was Jordan Carter (student of Starla Hibler) and second alternate was Fisher Fulton ( a student of Holly Vallandingham). Carley Netherton (student of Janet Kirby) won the Elementary Division. The first alternate was Price Rowe (student of Rebecca Clary). Maci Huffman and Rebekah McClain were chosen as winners in the piano duet category. In the Medium - Moderately Difficult III piano solo categories, the winner was Jack Malm (student of W.T. Skye Garcia). The first alternate was Rebekah McClain (student of Jessica Huddleston) and the second alternate was Daniel McClain (student of W.T. Skye Garcia). Zachary Garcia (student of W.T. Skye Garcia) was the piano solo winner in the Difficult I - Very Difficult II categories. The 1st Alternate in the Difficult 1 – Very Difficult II categories was Grant Rowsey (student of W.T. Skye Garcia). Zachary Garcia (student of W.T. Skye Garcia) was chosen the statewide winner in the original composition category as well as the winner in the Junior Class piano concerto division. Grant Rowsey won the Senior Piano Concerto Division. Saxon Rowland, Maggie Peercy and Jessica Patterson (students of Susanne McDaniel) from Tishomingo were deemed winners in the vocal solo, art song category. Jessica Patterson and Maggie Peercy were winners in the Vocal Duet/Art Song category. Brenna Hefley (student of Eva Strickland Phipps) and Maggie Peercy (student of Susann McDaniel) were chosen as winners in the Musical Theater category. First alternate was Paige Williams (student of Susann McDaniel). In the clarinet solo division, Rebecca Funderburg, (student of Mark Hollingsworth) was chosen as the winner. Honorable mentions were given to Kaylyn Rowsey, Jessie Pullen (piano solos), Morgan and Wesley Hurst (piano duet), and , Leah Blackburn (hymn playing).

Students receiving a Superior rating in piano solo at the District VI Festival on March 7 were Sean Allen, Ashlyn Angel, Peter Biles, Leah Blackburn, Britton Brewer, Ryan Burkhart, Andrea Burnsworth, Gabe Carbaugh, Jordan Carter, Kendall Carter, Gillian Cloar, Savannah Cloar, Sarah Combes, Seth Combes, Emily Crook, Weston Cunningham, Lucas Davis, Mary Dixon, Dennah Elliott, Hannah Fortner, Crystal Frederick, Fisher Fulton, Zachary Garcia, Charlie Gibson, Noah Gordon, Lanie Hand, Kellianne Hansen, Faith Henry, Brad Hetherington, Danya Hook, Cayden Howard, Maci Huffman, Morgan Hurst, Wesley Hurst, Jack Malm, Daniel McClain, Rebekah McClain, Thaddaeus McClain, MacKenzie McCurtain, Caleb Mitchell, Hanah Mitchell, Hayley Morrison, Cadey Netherton, Carley Netherton, Kithany Nichols, Brooke Powell, Jessie Pullen, Marshall Rauch, Madison Rowe, Price Rowe, Saxon Rowland, Grant Rowsey, Kaylyn Rowsey, Addy Steele, Daniel Steele, Avery Stevens, Alyssa Trett, Cole Townsend and Kristal Williams.

Receiving a Superior rating in Piano Duet were Maci Huffman, Rebekah McClain, Morgan Hurst and Wesley Hurst. Receiving a Superior in Hymn Playing were Leah Blackburn and Sarah Combes.

Receiving a Superior rating in Piano Concerto were Ashlyn Angel, Zachary Garcia and Grant Rowsey.

Receiving a Superior rating in Vocal Solo-Art Song were Jessica Patterson, Maggie Peercy, Saxon Rowland, Shelby Smith, Whitney Spence and Paige Williams. Receiving a Superior rating in Vocal Duet, Art Song were Jessica Patterson and Maggie Peercy. Brenna Hefley, Jessica Patterson, Maggie Peercy, Saxon Rowland, Shelby Smith , Whitney Spence and Paige Williams received Superior ratings in the Vocal Solo - Musical Theater category. Brenna Hefley received a Superior rating in the Vocal Solo – American Patriotic and Folk Song Event.

Students receiving Excellent ratings in Piano Solo were John Berk, Isaac Mapes, Ashlyn Morrison, Christopher Morrison, and Mikayla Sparks.



The teachers of the above students are Rebecca Clary (Tishomingo), W.T. Skye Garcia (Ada), Starla Hibler (Ada), Jessica Huddleston (Ada), Janet Kirby (Sulphur), Susann McDaniel (Tishomingo), Norma Millsap (Ada) Eva Strickland Phipps (Davis), Holly Vallandingham (Ada), Lynda Williams (Davis), and Joanne Yeargan (Ada).



Judges for the March 1 District VI Oklahoma Federation of Music Clubs Festival were Terri Hlubek, (Oklahoma City), Dr. Leon Whitesell (Edmond), Lavonna Whitesell (Edmond), Myra Schubert (Bethany), and Bob Matson (Ada).
