Awards were presented and Sherry Barnes was presented with the Xi Delta Gamma Girl of the Year award. Members attending were Pamla Armstrong, Sherry Barnes, Cindy Beasley, Sharon Beasley, Brenda Hall, Cindy Keefer, Carol Naberhouse, Belinda Runnels and Mary Story.

Ada Prime Timers

The Ada Prime Timers met at JD’s Cafe for the monthly buffet and meeting on April 15, 2008. President Neal Beasley led the flag salute, and Leonard Briley gave the invocation. Prayers were asked for those members who were ill. Happy Birthday was sung to Ruth Ann Taylor and Mildred Clinton. M. E. and Mary Lou Carr were feted with the Happy Anniversary song.

Kenneth and Mildred Clinton were welcomed as new members. Sue Jaquess read the minutes from the previous meeting, and Peggy Bagley gave the treasurer’s report.

After dinner, President Beasley introduced the speaker, Fionnuala Gurley, R. Ph., M.D., who presented an informative program and a slide presentation which included alarming statistics about heart disease and the current status of health among Oklahomans.

A cardiologist, Dr. Gurley, reported that 14 women die dach day in Oklahoma from heart disease. She stressed the value of chewing 2 - 4 baby aspirins or l adult aspirin if one thinks he/she might be having a heart attack and calling 911 immediately.

She also recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise for good heart health. She suggested that our state is underfunded and cited statistics about Oklahomans which might contribute to a poor state of health here compared to that in other states.

Mary Sue Roberts shared humorous stories with the group. The next meeting, May 20, will include a program by Gwen Gjovig, Executive Director for CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate). Visitors are invited.

Members and guests present included Floyd and Pat Gurley, Mary Sue Roberts, Leland and Mary Helen Newton, June Scott, Andy and Joann Hood, Elvin and Sue Jaquess, Peggy Bagley, L. T. and Betty Williams, Alma Hogan, Bobbie Sachs, Ted and Jackie Savage, M. E. and Mary Lou Carr, Neal and Patsy Beasley, Wendell and Treva Gurley, Betty Parham, Duane Doane, Kenneth and Mildred Clinton, Leona Loy, Paul and Margaret Sandmann, Lanny Sliger, Ruth Ann Taylor, Vestel and Bette Cole, Bonnie Shields, Ruby Firsching, Fern Peery, Roberto and Dorothy Escamilla, George Seaton, Glendora Van Dusen, Eileen Williams, Leonard Briley, Oneita Manual, Don and Brenda Clark, and Dr. Gurley.

Colbert Home and Community Education

Colbert Home and Community Education held its monthly meeting on Wednesday, April 16 at the home of Ruth Janik.

President Rozale Welch called the meeting to order at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of a devotional, and since things seemed to be centered on food in this meeting, Janik read a relatively new report from the Allen Advocate about the calorie content in various types of foods. It was a clever satire on specific foods, and when and how they are ingested, and sometimes where.

For example item eight on the list read: “Food on Toothpicks. Sausage, mini-franks, cheese, and crackers are all fattening UNLESS impaled on frilled toothpicks. The insertion of a sharp object allows the calories to leak out the bottom.”

Members recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag in unison, and this was followed by the reading of the CHCE Creed, led by Joyce Jared. Janik called the roll and each person responded with the name of her favorite TV chef, or in some cases with “I don’t have any,” or “I don’t watch the cooking shows.” Janik read the minutes of the previous meeting. Bernice Patrick gave the treasurer’s report.

Due to the distance involved, no one from Colbert HCE attended the SE District meeting in Wister on March 18. Welch reminded members about the Quilt Show on April 25-26.

Jared, Patrick, and Janik will provide cookies/desserts for the food concession stand. Patrick has signed up for volunteer work at the show.

Patrick read an article about a very interesting division of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. It is the purpose of the Mutilated Currency Division in Washington, D.C., to receive currency which has been torn, is moldy from dampness, or damaged by fire or otherwise battered and sent in by the public for reimbursement.

The program for April, “Yesterday’s Cook (created) Today’s Chef,” designed by Debbie Sharp, Extension Educator-Murray County, was presented to Colbert HCE by Elaine Sundquist. It gave an in-depth review, basically cooking-oriented, spanning the 1900s through to the 1990s.

It included information on changing food habits as well as information related to the development of appliances during that time-period, plus a brief but interesting cross-view of living in America from when most families lived on farms up to and including two-income family living, and ended with: “What’s next? What will this century leave behind? Where will we get our food? Will our grandchildren know how to cook?”

The meeting was adjourned at 3:15 p.m. Jared asked the blessing and refreshments were served, part of which were French, in keeping with the OHCE-suggested culture of the month theme. Attendees were Elaine Sundquist, Ruth Janik, Joyce Jared, Bernice Patrick, and Rozzale Welch.

Colbert HCE will meet again on May 21 at 1:30 p.m. at the home of Rozale Welch.

Ada Shrine Club

The Ada Shrine Club held its March meeting at J. D.’s Cafeteria. President Corky Hudson was in charge of the meeting. The opening prayer was led by Lester Craft, followed by the salute to the flag.

Reports were received from the local Masonic Lodges. Several lodges reported they had petitions in progress. M. E. Carr had received his 50-year pin.

Plans for the concert, starring Clancy Davis, are well underway. The concert will be held June 13th at the Agri-plex.

The meeting closed with prayer by Lester Craft.

Those attending were Corky and Johnnye Hudson, Hilton and Marian Brumfield, M. E. and Mary Lou Carr, T. J. and Phyllis Phillips, Lester and Metta Ruth Craft, Steve and Marie Wilson, Carl and Eileen Wofford, Dennis and Ann Noahubi, Nicholas Noahubi, and James and Carolyn Tooley.
