Edwards competes in “Sweet Sixteen”

ST PETER, Minn. — Former Ada High tennis standout Kayli Edwards and the Wheaton Thunder women’s tennis team reached the third round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis National Championship May 2-4 before bowing out to Gustavus Adolphus.

Edwards and doubles partner Brittney Dunn picked up Wheaton’s lone doubles victory — an 8-5 win over Laura Arnebeck and Jenny Arnfelt and Edwards had split sets in singles 6-4, 4-6 but Gustavus claimed the team victory at 5-2 before that match could end.

Wheaton, ranked 17th in Division III, ends the 2007-2008 tennis season with an impressive 22-4 record. Edwards finishes her sophomore season with the Thunder with a 23-2 singles record and an outstanding 28-1 doubles record with Dunn — Putnam City North graduate.

Of the 435 Division III schools nationwide, the largest of the NCAA divisions, 47 teams were selected to compete in the 2008 NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship. Of the 47 teams only three players were from Oklahoma: Edwards, Dunn, and Amy Sheetz from Edmond who plays for Mary Washington (ranked No. 6).
