Quilting guild helps to fill void

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Ada The Busy Hands Quilting Guild recently hand made a quilt for the Red Cross and another to be raffled-off with proceeds to benefit Relay for Life.

“This was a community of women coming together as a quilting guild,” said Elaine Rhynes, manager of the Pontotoc County branch of the American Red Cross. “Wal-Mart provided the material and East Central University provided their Family and Consumer Science building and machines and equipment so that 13 ladies could sew at one time.”

The quilt will be given to the Red Cross which in turn, will give it to a family in need following a disaster.

“It’s a great thing when we can give people money, but it’s such a wonderful thing for a community to come together and provide such a personal touch, after a disaster,” Rhynes said.

Rhynes said after a disaster, people often miss personal items like grandma’s quilt, mom and dad’s photographs, etc.

“In addition to the monetary support from the Red Cross and other United Way agencies that they can have a personal something that they can make their new heirloom,” Rhynes said.
