Ada women sweep contest

TULSA — The Made in Oklahoma Coalition announced the winners of the 2009 Recipe Round Up contest June 12 at Hahn Appliance in Tulsa. Three Ada residents swept the competition and took home prizes in 11 of the 25 categories.

Mary Shivers led the competition winning seven categories. She won second place appetizer for her Okie Dokie Mushroom Sausage Pizza Bites and second place dessert for her Homestead Double Butter Pecan Bread Pudding. Shivers also won in several categories for Best Recipes Using a Made in Oklahoma product.

Shivers’ sister, Leah Lyon, won first place entrée for her Black Mesa Cheeseburgers with Thunder Head Country Slaw. She also won first place recipe using Shawnee Mills products for her Cheesy Pioneer Corncakes with Bacon Wilted Spinach and Termayters.

“We tried to keep our recipes a secret from each other until we were ready to enter the contest,” said Mary Shivers about her and sister, Leah Lyon. “Ironically, we would come up with similar ideas and recipes.”

Carol Hyde won the Baker’s Choice Award for her Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Tart.

Hyde said she loves to cook and her family rarely turn down her dishes. "I have made Cream Cheese Caramel Apple Tart many times for my family," she said.

Roz Keimig of Guymon won the grand prize for her recipe, Stacked Steak Salad. She will receive a KitchenAid kitchen makeover valued at $7,000. All of the Ada winners will receive various KitchenAid products.

Overall, 22 winners took home prizes for best recipes in the categories of Pleasin’ Appetizers, Dig In Dessert, Main Entrée and Best Recipe using a specific Made in Oklahoma company product.

“We were very pleased with the statewide response to the Recipe Round Up contest this year,” said Richard Wasson, executive director of the Made in Oklahoma Coalition. “The participants really embraced using Made in Oklahoma products and that was best reflected in our winning recipes.”

The Recipe Round Up contest began in March and ended last month. More than 400 participants submitted original recipes using Made in Oklahoma products. The final recipes were prepared by students in the culinary arts program at the OSU Institute of Technology in Okmulgee and judged by local food columnists and chefs across the state.
