Texas Tech tops Tigers in Legends Classic, 167-115

LUBBOCK, Texas – Texas Tech set a school record for points in a game as the Red Raiders rolled to a 167-115 victory over the East Central University Tigers Thursday night in the 2008 Legends Classic at the United Spirit Arena.

The 167 points by Texas Tech (including 90 in the second half) were the most points scored by one team in an NCAA game since the 1996-97 season in which Long Island scored 179. The Red Raiders’ previous record for points in a game was 128 in a double-overtime win over Texas in 1994.

The game counted as an exhibition for the NCAA Division II Tigers, who placed seven players in double figures led by sophomore Dontae Figgs’ 19 points.

Junior forward Justin Wilkerson, who played at Texas Tech before transferring to ECU, followed with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, in a losing cause while senior center Ian Adams posted a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

Tyler Thetford (13), Geo Brewer (12), Nate Bateman (11) and Wes Badley (10) also got into double figures for the Tigers, who shot 39.4 percent from the floor for the game. Freshmen Cory Nicholson and Desmond Clark chipped in eight points apiece.

Eight players reached double digits for the Red Raiders, who shot 59.3 percent from the field and was 13-of-25 (52 percent) from 3-point range.

Trevor Cook poured in a game-high and career-high 20 points for Texas Tech while Alan Voskuil and John Roberson tallied 17 apiece. Wally Dunn and Mike Singletary each tossed in 16 as Dunn sank 4-of-5 long-range shots while Singletary pulled down nine rebounds as the Red Raiders owned a 65-51 advantage on the boards.

The Tigers play their final exhibition Saturday at NCAA Division I Texas-San Antonio at 7 p.m. ECU officially opens the 2008-09 season at Dallas Baptist on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
