Emergency crews respond to wreck, car fire

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Ada Ada firefighters responded to a wreck and car fire less than a mile apart Friday.

Emergency workers were called to an accident on the J.A. Richardson Loop near the Kerr Lab exit just after 3 p.m. A man driving east in a Nissan 4-door ran off the road to the right, overcorrected and rolled the car in the center median, according to Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Brian Bagwell.

The man’s 5-year-old daughter was a passenger in the vehicle. Ada firefighters and Valley View EMS worked to stabilize the girl and secured her to a backboard. According to radio traffic, she was complaining of neck pain.

The driver refused treatment and rode in the ambulance with the girl to Valley View Regional Hospital. After stabilizing the girl, firefighters were called to a car fire.

A 2004 Infinity G35 was on the Reeves Road exit just off the loop and was fully engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived. Assistant Chief Rick Ross said it may have been an electrical problem that caused the fire.

“(She said) she was driving down the road looking for a gas station,” Ross said. “She was low on fuel and her low tire pressure light in the dash started flashing on and off so she pulled over to the side of the road to check her tires.

“She got out, she looked and everything seemed fine,” Ross continued. “She went to get back in the vehicle and as she bent down to get in, she saw black smoke coming from under the passenger side of the dash. She said it almost instantly started getting thicker and she got scared, grabbed her purse, backed up and the car engulfed.”

Firefighters doused the flames, but the car was a total loss. Names of all the victims were unavailable by press time.
