Teens arrested on church grounds

JHS students face burglary charge at First Baptist

By Stewart Voegtlin

After and incident appeared in a recent Police Report, members of the First Baptist Church asked that more information about the incident and those involved be made available to the public.

On Friday, December 9 at 8:30 a.m., City of Jackson Police Lt. Bob Carrick received a call from dispatch to meet with Sgt. Corey Biles behind the First Baptist Church in reference to subjects being in a storage building located behind the church.

Carrick arrived on the scene and he and Biles checked the area. When they reached the last storage building, they saw a male identified as 17-year-old Antonio Mulkey stick his head out from over the rafters of the building.

Mulkey was ordered to come down off of the building, which he did without incident. Biles asked Mulkey who else was inside of the building, and Mulkey said no one. Biles then heard footsteps coming from inside the building and ordered the person to come out. Within minutes, the second person – a 15-year-old female – emerged from over the rafters.

Mulkey and the 15-year-old female are both students at Jackson High School. The female was returned to school; Mulkey was processed and transported to the Jackson Police Department pending warrants filed by the Magistrate Judge.

A juvenile complaint was filed against the female, charging her with burglary.

Warrants were obtained on Mulkey for burglary and enticing a child for indecent purposes. Both students were suspended from school pending a tribunal to be held within 10 days. Neither is a member of the First Baptist Church.
