Travis elected BOC Chairman

Harkness to serve as Vice Chairman

By Stewart Voegtlin

The first meeting of the Butts County Board of Commissioners for 2006, held this past Monday evening, saw a change of the guard, and several notable reappointments.

“I greatly appreciate Mr. Kersey’s excellent work over the past year,” said newly elected Commissioner Board Chairman Eddie Travis, “he worked diligently in everything he set out to do. I just ask him one thing: to continue to help out as much as he can. This is the same thing that I told Commissioner Lester Peek when he was chairman; we have a really good working relationship.”

“You read everything exactly the way I wrote it,” laughed Commissioner Gerald Kersey. “I appreciate your comments, and you – and the rest of the Board should know – that I will help out any way that I can.”

Minutes before, Commissioner Gerald Kersey nominated Travis as Chairman of the Board for 2006; Commissioner Peek seconded the nomination, and Travis was elected by a vote of 4-1, with Commissioner John Harkness voting against Travis.

“We all do our best for the county, and I will continue to do so,” said Travis. “And I have no hard feelings for Mr. Harkness; we’re going to move forward at this time.”

Commissioner Peek then made a motion to nominate Harkness as Vice Chairman. Commissioner McIntyre seconded the motion, and Harkness was elected by unanimous vote.

Also at the meeting County Administrator Dr. Van Whaler, County Clerk Dianne Holloway, Deputy County Clerk Michael Brewer, and County Attorney Ken Lawrence were all reappointed.

Larry Morgan was reappointed to the Library Board, and Community Development Director Steven Lease introduced new Land Use Planner, Moniqua Williams, to the Board.
