Sheriff agrees to summit with BOC

First meeting will be March 13

In order for diplomacy to even be a possibility, both sides have to agree to willingly engage each other. The Butts County Board of Commissioners had extended the invitation, and the Butts County Sheriff’s Office has accepted.

At the monthly meeting of the Board of Commissioners held Monday, January 9, County Administrator Dr. Van Whaler requested that a series of summit meetings between the Board and the Sheriff’s Office be established in lieu of placing a county police force referendum on the school SPLOST ballot in March. The purpose of the meetings will be to discuss countywide law enforcement activities and jail issues; the intent is that the discussion will result in meaningful dialogue and cooperation between both entities.

Butts County Sheriff Gene Pope has agreed to meet with the commissioners, and now all eyes are on Monday, March 13, when the first in a series of summit meetings will be held. The March 13 meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will be held in the Commissioner’s meeting room of the new county administration building located at 625 West Third Street.
