Burglary at Big D's nets $85,000

Jewelry taken after window smashed

By Marshall Avett

The sound of a building’s alarm could be heard as one approached the Jackson square in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 11. Once the storefronts were in view, the presence of a Jackson Police Department car in front of Big D’s Drugs pointed to the source. Sometime around 2 a.m. that morning, someone broke into the local pharmacy and stole an estimated $85,000 in jewelry.

Big D’s is known for its excellent and plentiful selection of jewelry, and the robber must have known this, too. The culprit smashed out a pane of glass above the store’s entrance on Oak Street, and made his way into the store somehow through that new opening.

Once inside the thief smashed through glass display counters to remove jewelry from inside.

He exited the store through the back door, which opens into an alley. Blood was found on the door, which could be from cuts the thief receives climbing in the broken front window or removing jewelry from amid broken glass in the display counters.

Last week, acting on a tip, law enforcement officials searched a house in Jackson not far from the square, but found no evidence of items taken from Big D’s. Additional leads are sure to come in as Big D’s Owner, Danny Hoard, has put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for the robbery of his store.

As for the store itself, Big D’s was open for business on Wednesday following the break-in, and by day’s end had new glass and new bars up above the door.
