Flovilla Council reflects on 2005

Appointments made, gas reimbursement increased

By Stewart Voegtlin

At the Flovilla City Council meeting held this past week, city appointments were made for 2006, committee reports were presented, and Mayor Harvey Norris looked toward the future and reset the city gas mileage rate.

“I want to congratulate all of you on this past year’s work, and I also want to say that we’ve got a lot of hard work ahead of us,” Norris told the Council. “This is the first time I’ve seen all of you together this year, and I wish you the best and may the Lord shine on you.”

The City of Flovilla appointments for the new year are as follows: Glenn Williams, Fire Chief; David Dunn, Assistant Fire Chief; Dennis Smith, Zoning Administrator; William Kirns, Water Superintendent; Romela Freeman, City Clerk; Christiana Wooddall, Code Enforcement Officer; Cutis Gaye, City Attorney. Kevin Wagnerin, former City Attorney, will complete ordinance work before being replaced by Curtis Gaye.

Sims Crawford is the Chairman of the 2006 Planning & Zoning Board. Planning & Zoning Board Members are Virginia Williams, Thomas Douglas, Asa Thurman and Christina Wooddall.

Lottie Grier is the Chairman of the 2006 Tree Board. Tree Board Members are Virginia Williams, Thomas Douglas, Asa Thurman, and Christina Wooddall.

Following city appointments, Mayor Norris discussed resetting the city gas mileage – a reimbursement the city pays to employees for city-related travel.

“The state average is 44¢ per mile,” said Norris. “We’re at 30¢ now, and the price of gas is getting higher every day. I’m suggesting that we reset our mileage to 40¢.”

Council Member Glorine Thurman made a motion to reset the gas mileage to 40¢ per mile; Council Member Jacqueline Grier seconded the motion, and it passed unanimously.

The next meeting of the Flovilla City council will be Monday, February 20 at 7:00 p.m.
