Community-wide cleanup sought

Volunteers needed for April effort

By Marshall Avett

There are good, community-conscious citizens among us who give of their time to make Butts County a better place to live. While this volunteerism takes many forms, one of the most visible is the individual on the side of the road picking up litter.

One person with the motivation to get out, pick up and dispose of trash properly can make a big difference in his or her neighborhood. But a large group of these volunteers working together can change the face of the county.

That’s the idea behind Keep Georgia Beautiful, a project of the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, which last year organized some 39,000 people across the state to participate in the Great American Cleanup. Its primary focus is litter prevention and removal, but has grown to include other community improvement initiatives such as recycling drives, graffiti removal and neighborhood beautification.

This year, the Clean Up Butts Association, or CUBA, is working to motivate citizens around Butts County to take part in the annual cleanup effort. This year’s Great American Cleanup will take place in April.

Keep Georgia Beautiful and sponsors will provide stickers, brochures and posters to help promote the event, as well as litter bags for refuse as well as for inside automobiles, gloves for volunteers, and activity sheets for kids.

“If we all work together like we did on the Griffin Technical College project, we can do this,” said Jim Trenton, president of CUBA. “Please get involved.” To learn more about the Great American Cleanup and CUBA, call Trenton at 770-775-0204.
