Are we confusing our work with our job?

MUSINGS

By Ben Wright

Are we confusing our work with our job? Let us look a minute at what work is? Work is something that fulfills us. Work is something we love to do, not something we do with one eye on the time clock. This fulfilling adventure is something we love to do, not something we do with one eye on the time clock. This fulfilling adventure is something that we could no more help doing than we could help breathing. A job is completely opposite. Have we replaced the concept of work with the concept of a job? A job is something we put little investment in but try to get as much pay as we can and quit as soon as we can.

Hopefully, we move to the time when what we do for a living is really our life’s work.

When I was working my way through college and seminary, I probably had over 30 jobs, but it was not my work. These jobs were just the means through which I was allowed to do my life’s work.

If it were a goal to reduce humans to nothing, it would be rather easy. Just give his/her work a character of uselessness.

Work is super important to us. Only those who really enjoy their work know what real joy and happiness is.

When we look forward to each day that we work, there is a by-product produced that is called pride. When we have pride in our work, we are compelled to do the best we can even if no one is looking.

Even if we enjoy our work we have to be careful not to overdo it. For example, as our workload increases, so does our need for sleep. Usually, if we are not good managers the busier we are the less sleep we get. On the long run, this practice will cause us many physical and mental problems.

If we are organized properly we will not over work. By breaking our work in manageable bite sized parts during the five-day week, we can avoid working on weekends. One person said it this way, “I find that if I get away on the weekends, decisions come quicker Monday morning and I have an objective view.”

Job or work? What is your conclusion?

Boss: “Who said you could neglect your office work just because I give you a little kiss now and then?”

Secretary: “My attorney.”

Have a good week.
