In our view: Digging deeper hole

City Manager Jan Blase’s recommendation to the Neosho City Council to approve a $1 million “anticipatory” loan reminds us of this old saying:“When you find yourself standing in a hole, quit digging.” Blase acknowledged Tuesday that he “did not communicate very well” with either the City Council or the city staff when he used a state loan reserved for airport hangars to pay the city’s bills.

Voices: Not the same

It made me mad and embarrassed when the Globe printed a recent letter that said animals are more than family. I think that was a huge insult to family, and an insult to the human race. Animals are all beneath us. And obviously animals never built a city and animals were never smart enough to make food and cook food. They can only eat food. Even bugs and spiders and mice can do that.

Voices: Disturbing news

After reading the article “Opening society’s eyes” of Oct. 24, 2009, it was fathomless the statistics quoted by the Alliance of Southwest Missouri. Then, from Nov. 4, 2009, to Nov. 18, 2009, there were nine days that The Joplin Globe informed us of someone being arrested, gone to trial and or being convicted of child pornography or molestation. There were a total of 20 people facing the justice system.

Voices: Fear of effect

There’s been a lot of fear of the effects of socialized medicine in this country. The thing is, we already have socialized medicine in this country. We just don’t have it for everybody. But hey, you want government out of your Medicare? I’m down with that. Medicare, as we know it, could be abolished and we could finally stop taxing working people to pay ridiculous amounts of money to keep the indigent and physically deteriorating alive on machines another few months.

Voices: The woes of Jasper County

The Jasper County commissioners are wondering what to do about the loss in sales tax revenue. Their thought is to raise our property taxes to offset the loss. Here’s a news flash for you. Sales are down because people do not have any money and you want to raise our property taxes?

In our view: Webster's solution

Missourians shouldn’t be surprised if a Democratic governor and a Republican lieutenant governor can’t play nice. Politics not only can make strange bedfellows, as a pundit once observed, but they also can create a climate unlikely to foster cooperation between potential rivals in the state’s next gubernatorial election.

Voices: Put money to work

Rush Limbaugh and friends, put your money where your mouths are. If you want to stimulate the economy, put some of your money in the pot.

Voices: Giving a ‘hoorah’

Hoorah for the Globe’s editorial, “Investigating Fort Hood Shootings” (Globe, Nov. 12). Shamefully, other media outlets are afraid to call a terrorist a “terrorist,” unless, of course, it is a non-Muslim who blows up men, women and children in Oklahoma City.

Voices: Opinions of the day

I loved Melia Elliott’s Thanksgiving essay and the main editorial “Let debates commence” (Globe, Nov. 24). Melia Elliott’s story about the way her disabled veteran father used his physical condition to create fun, surprise and pleasure for children was perfect.

Voices: Little good from debates

Concerning the editorial “Let debates commence” (Globe, Nov. 24), we might bear in mind that the Senate debates will be between 60 who voted yes in favor of an expensive and foolish experiment in socialistic medicine for the United States, and two-thirds as many who already oppose it.

Voices: Heck of a show in Lamar

We at Maryville High School wanted to let the folks in Southwest Missouri know that the Lamar community and school district put on a heck of a show for our visiting football team and fans this past weekend.
