dwoodin@joplinglobe.com Motorists will soon have to find new routes around the Connecticut Avenue train overpass construction site. The city of Joplin will close Connecticut Avenue to through traffic from 24th to 26th streets starting Nov. 16, according to David Hertzberg, Joplin’s public works director. He said the street will be closed for six to eight months to allow construction of a train overpass. A one-lane train bridge about 20 feet wide is to be built beside the current train tracks. Those tracks will be taken out after the overpass is finished, when train track can be routed onto the new bridge. The train overpass will be about 16 feet high and the street will be lowered to pass underneath. Hertzberg said the crossing would look similar to one that exists on Fourth Street, east of Turk Avenue. As part of the work, New Hampshire Avenue south of 20th Street to Montana Place and 24th Street will be permanently closed to vehicle traffic. That closure is necessary because the train crossing on that street will need to be raised to form the approach to the overpass, making it too steep for motor vehicles to cross, engineers have said. The city will receive about $1.4 million from Kansas City Southern railroad and the federal government for closing the New Hampshire crossing to traffic, reducing the cost of the train bridge project from $6 million to $4.6 million, engineers have said. Work to widen Connecticut to four lanes from Murphy Boulevard south to 30th Street has been going on the past two years. The public works director said businesses along Connecticut Avenue will remain open during construction of the train bridge. Across town, the city is preparing to close another street in connection with a stormwater project. Fifth Street at Cox Avenue will be shut down as part of the current stormwater drainage construction work going on at Fourth and Fifth Street from Murphy Boulevard to Division Avenue. Fourth Street at Murphy is closed temporarily for that work. However, engineers have discovered that a larger channel than had been planned is needed at Fifth and Cox and have received the City Council’s authorization to close that street to accommodate construction of the drainage channel. As part of that project, the city is buying a piece of property at the intersection from Greg and Taunya Lesley for $6,500 to remove a building because the area is needed for the channel.
