Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I can’t help but laugh as I see the full page ads running in the newspaper with headlines, “Amish man’s new miracle idea helps home heat bills hit rock bottom.” The fallacies are obvious in the advertising.

The article says, “…the ‘Fireless Flame’ technology that gives you the peaceful flicker of a real fire…You just plug it in.” Anybody that knows anything about the Amish knows they don’t use electricity! And what about the Amish gentleman shaking hands with a guy in a business suit? To my knowledge the Amish don’t generally pose for pictures and they don’t enter into business deals with us ‘English’.

In reading the article it appears to me that the only thing this so-called Amish man is doing is constructing a wooden mantel that goes over an electric heater!

What has happened to “truth in advertising”? I believe this ad would be better placed in the comic section.

Ada

Dear Editor,

I love Ada City Schools. Not only am I a graduate of the system but two of my children are graduates and my youngest is currently at one of the grade centers. Some of the biggest influences of my life have been Ada educators and/or administrative personnel.

Having said that, I must also state for the record that I am deeply troubled and saddened with the current state of affairs in our city schools and the recent embarrassing handling of the football coaches’ situation.

I confess that I consider the Dean family friends of mine although we do not socialize or even see each other on a regular basis. But we have known each other a long time and they have offered me support when others didn’t and now it is just a simple fact that I have no other choice but to be in their corner even when, perhaps, others aren’t. This is a privilege to me and I am proud to do it.

Steve Dean and Greg Dean have shed blood, sweat and tears for Ada City Schools and its high school football program. They are men of integrity and I consider them to have been valuable positive influences, not only on the players of their football team, but with youth throughout the community. Regardless of what you might personally think about these men and how the football program was run in recent years, I truly believe that at the very, very least, you could have offered these gentlemen the resepect and dignity that they have earned and that you owe. Yes, that’s right, you owe these men more. These men are Cougars and until recently I would have never believed that you would treat ‘our own’ in this manner.

And I say the same thing about Jeff Waters, who was not relieved of his coaching duties, but instead resigned. He, like Steve and Greg, has my deepest admiration and respect.

I believe all of you have done a great injustice to that trio for sure, but even more so to the student-athletes of the entire school system and the community at large.

Of course, this is just my opinion and I probably do not hold much clout with you since I am just a simple working man who has no influence or holds no family pedigree and am not and never will be part of the social circle that you seem to get your direction from. Still, I cannot and will not sit idly by and not make my voice heard.
