Letter to the Editor, April 11, 2008

Dear Editor,

I want to commend our Post Mistress, Carol Johnson, the Ada Evening News and Randy Mitchell on the fine article about dogs in the March 23 paper.

We remain silent too many times on controversial subjects and it takes courage to make the public aware of hazards.

Dogs and guns are a part of our heritage. Both vicious dogs and guns are weapons for our protection, but when in the hands of irresponsible people, they create a cancer in our society. We as a society must share some of the blame for the death of the elderly lady by vicious dogs by not having proper laws and enforcement of them.

Don’t misunderstand me, I like dogs. They are one of man's best friends, but without control, vicious dogs can be our worst enemy.

I have biked over the state for years, including the back roads. Just this year I came upon 2 vicious dogs. One was across from the Ken Lance Arena in Union Valley and the other on the old highway between Stonewall and Union Valley.

I was attacked by a pit bull and bitten on the leg on the road from stonewall to Owl Creek. Two large pit bull dogs were at this house and I since learned that a neighbor had killed the one that bit me.

This is not about all dogs both large and small that come out, yap yap yap, but only the vicious one that bends bike wheels and damages tires, by biting them and are able to kill a person like the ones that took the life of the elderly lady.

I would like to see all roads safe for bycyclists, people walking, joggers, service personel and postal employees.

I am 86 years old and still dream of the day that our roads will be like in the Netherlands. Smooth roads and bike trails, free of pot holes, vicious dogs, no garbage and weeds, considerate drivers and beautiful fields of flowers.

I can hear some people say, well buddy we have lived like this all our lives and ain’t gonna change for a few of you smart alec bikers. You can just take the first plane and go to Holland.

Reese Scott,

Ada, OK
