Arrest made in connection with infant’s death

Talina Turner

WEWOKA — A man was arrested in the death of a three and a half month old infant yesterday west of Wewoka in Seminole County.

Seminole County Undersheriff Charlie Miller said Dale Hicks, 21, was arrested Tuesday after District Attorney Chris Ross reviewed the case and reqested an arrest warrant. Miller said they were waiting on Medical Examiner’s reports to determine if the baby’s death could be ruled a homicide.

In November, 3-month-old Kaylie was left with her father and her twin sister while their mother went out of town to attend to family business, Miller said. The undersheriff said Hicks claimed he watched a movie with the twins and fed them and they both went to sleep at about 3 p.m. Hicks told Miller Kaylie’s twin began crying and he went to check on her and gave her a pacifier. Hicks said he went to check on Kaylie and saw she was purple and blue and called 911.

Miller said Hicks was instructed on how to give Kaylie C.P.R. until paramedics arrived and took Kaylie to Integris Seminole Medical Center in Seminole. Two days later, Kaylie was taken off of life support and died.

Miller said the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be head trauma. Hicks told officials Kaylie was in a “bouncy” chair and somehow flipped it over, hitting her head on a baby wipe container. Miller said after Ross reviewed the medical examiner’s report, he requested the warrant. Miller said Hicks was arrested and the case was turned over to Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigations.
