Benefits for Children grows from Benefits Card project

ADA — Benefits for Children is a program established by New Perspectives department of Tanti Study Club through the Benefits Card Fund-raising effort. Sponsors say certified Ada School staff will be reimbursed for expenses incurred while helping children with needs that extend beyond the classroom. The needs could include food, clothing and basic necessities.

The Benefits Card was sold during October 2006 for $30 and used for a 10-day period beginning Nov. 3, 2006. Card holders received a 20 percent discount at 35 participating stores (with a few manufacuturer’s exclusions) and for lunch only in restaurants.

New Perspectives department of of Tanti Study Club members said they appreciated the merchants who participated and consumers who purchased the Benefits Card in 2006. Sponsors said their support enabled them to help many children in need throughout the community. A Benefits Card 2007 project is planned.



Hereford Whirlers

ADA — Hereford Whirlers Square Dance Club danced Feb. 15 at Wintersmith Park Lodge to the calling of Ken Harden, club caller. Martha Rhynes led line dances between square dance tips.

Host couples for the evening were Turk and Shirley Barrett. A potluck supper was served at intermission. Bill Stribling said opening prayer. Turk Barrett led salute to the flag.

President Bill Black conducted a brief business meeting. Officers and delegates were reminded of the district business meeting to be held Feb. 24 at Ada First United Church activities building.

Attending were Elvin and Sue Jaquess, Mary Ann Brooks, Charles Drake, Willard and Martha Rhynes, Dot McElveen, Bill Black, Turk and Shirley Barrett, Larry and Tricia Marlow, Dave and Jodi Jackson, Pat and Fretta Moore, Tommy and Carol Vass, Joe Marquis and Lynn Minor, Ken and Norine Harden, Bill Striblin and Gordon Ward.



VVRH

ADA — Catharine Choate, director of Valley View Regional Hospital Auxiliary, told the history of the auxiliary during a Valentine party and recruitment meeting Feb. 15.

She said the auxiliary was the first in Oklahoma and was organized 60 years ago by doctors’ wives and nurses. Choate also mentioned various items the organization has purchased for the hospital.

Mary Sue Roberts, cheer leader, entertained the group by telling humorous stories.

Several members told of their duties and where they worked. Those were Ruby Firsching, Imogene Smart, Doris Blackburn, Lois Morgan, Anita Miller and Dolores Davis.

Tables were decorated with Valentine decorations and bouquets. A drawing was held by guests and the bouquets were awarded to them.

Choate greeted those attending and Gina Fredman made and presented each one with a name tag. Members attending were Ruby Firsching, Lois Morgan, Jeannie Tolliver, Dena Oliphant, Loretta Yin, Wanda Privett, Connie Watson, Midge Cerney, Gene Davis, Anita Miller, Betty Park, Ina Suydam, Pat Morgan, Imogene Smart, Doris Blackburn, Shirley Hill, Chuck Perry, Norma Roberts, Mary Sue Roberts, Joyce Wilcox, Anna Lucas, Dorothy Weiss, Mary Joe Whitwell, Linda Cutler, Doris Brooks, Roy Watson, Ruth Davidson, Ann Bradford, Tom Lamson, Dolores Davis and Bobbie Plumlee. Catharine Choate, director, and Gina Fredman, secretary, of the hospital staff also attended.

Guests attending were Alyce Scotson, Dub Tolliver, Jo Ann Hunt, Irma Drennan, Fern Perry, Patsy Beasley, Lynda Bowen, Mary Jean Mayhue, Christy Wright, Don W. Ellis and Paula Fortune.



Preceptor Delta Phi

ADA — Paul and Lucille Collins hosted the Feb. 17 social meeting of Preceptor Delta Phi.

The dinner menu included baked chicken breasts, scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole, baked beans and salad. Dessert included chocolate brownies and lemon bars.

Attending were Larry and Bobby Darbison, Don and Juanita True, Annette Rhoads, Carol Winton and her daughter, Susan Wood, and Winton’s granddaughter, Audra Wood, 2. Guest attending was Betty Rennke.



Salvation Army Auxiliary

ADA — Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary met Feb. 9 at the Citadel.

Luncheon tables were decorated with a Valentine theme in red and pink. Lunch was prepared by Salvation Army Capt. Lori Lucas.

Martha Freeman chaired the meeting. Lucas said prayer.

Roberta Summers gave the devotion on “Love.” She referenced several scriptures, including John 3:16, “For God so loved the world He gave HIs only begotten Son.”

The 2006 Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary Silver Tea was reviewed. Sponsors said in spite of having to change the date of the tea because of bad weather, the tea did very well this year. All the baked goods and craft items were sold and guests were generous with donations.

The upcoming National Advisory meeting in Dallas, Texas, was discussed. Lucas and Doreen McAlister will be attending.

In regular business, members were reminded the annual dues of $5 are now being accepted. Changes of address or phone numbers for the new directories should be submitted as soon as possible. The Nominating Committee will be presenting the slate of officers for 2007 at the March meeting. The 2007 budget will also be presented in March.

Diamond ‘K’

ADA — District Attorney Bill Peterson gave his version of “The Innocent Man,” a book by John Grisham, at the Feb. 20 meeting of Diamond ‘K’ Kiwanis at the Ada Public Library. Peterson also spoke about errors in the book, legal incompetence, DNA and Glen Gore.

President Elvin Jaquess opened the meeting with pledge to the flag and Roy Watson said opening prayer.

Twenty-nine members and 10 guests attended.

On Feb. 13, 24 members and five guests from the Shawnee Club attended to hear two registered nurses from Valley View Regional Hospital speak.

On Feb. 6, 25 members were present to hear Ken Johnson, attorney, speak on Propositions 1 and 2 and economic development.

On Jan. 30, 23 members heard Dick Scalf retired from Robert S. Kerr Environmental Research Laboratories speak on water and the Arbuckle-Simpson Aquifer.

On Jan. 23, 27 members listened to a program from Edward Jones.

On Jan. 9, Billie Floyd spoke about Frances Wintersmith and the impact she had on Ada. Wintersmith was the only woman on the park board in 1930.



Prime Timers

ADA — PAST (Preserving Area Stories in Time) performers presented a historical skit, “The Best Kept Secret of the West,” at Prime Timers’ meeting Feb. 20 at J.D.’s Cafeteria.

PAST performers include Alberta Blackburn, Judy Hisaw, Ruth Ann Taylor, Jodie Jackson, Billlie Floyd, Charles Barrick, Joe Braly, Ann Kepper and Dave Jackson.

PAST is an organization formed by a group of local residents with deep interests in establishing an area museum, identifying and preserving local historical sites and promoting historical education.

Alba Little, president, was in charge of the meeting. Elvin Jaquess gave the invocation.

Members with February birthdays were recognized. They include Andy Hood, Joe Parsons and Betty Voss.

Mary Sue Roberts entertained the group with humorous stories.

Guests included Mary Lou Bass, Robert Cheadle and members of PAST.

Next meeting will be March 20 with Gene Evans presenting a program about early days of Wintersmith Park.
