Cub scouts race in the Soap Box Derby

Over 150 Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, parents, siblings, and friends gathered on the east side of the aqueduct (5th street) in Ardmore for the 4th Annual Soap Box Derby conducted by Arbuckle Area Council, Boy Scouts of America.

The double elimination races were run in three classes - lightweight, middleweight, and heavyweight. Each car and driver were weighed and registered prior to the beginning of the race.

Brett Matherly, the new Boy Scout Executive, opened the event by leading the crowd in the Pledge of Allegiance which was followed by the Invocation led by Joe Genn - Scoutmaster of Troop 117, Lone Grove, OK.

Event organizer, Denny Alexander - Scoutmaster of Troop 5, 1st Methodist Church in Ardmore gave instructions to the participants and then turned the conduct of the races over to Steve Thompson - Scoutmaster of Troop 3, 1st Baptist Church in Ardmore.

Each Troop or Pack built the cars as part of their yearly scouting program and selected several drivers to run the race.

The winner is the car and not an individual driver. There were over 30 races which were conducted in front of a very enthusiastic crowd who cheered on all contestants.

Units participating in the event were: Packs 35 and 18 from Ardmore as well as Troops 13 & 28 from Ada; Troops 3, 5, & 18 from Ardmore; Troop 92 from Atoka; Troop 117 from Lone Grove; Troop 32 from Marietta; and Troop 179 from Tupelo.

Winners were awarded trophies upon completion of the event.

The scouts thank all the parents, friends and families that supported their youth during the event. For more information on Scouting phone the Arbuckle Area Council Office at 580-223-0831.
