Deputies capture fugitive

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Konawa Seminole County deputies captured a man Sunday who was wanted for allegedly shooting a gun near deputies.

Joseph Bounds, 20, Konawa, was taken into custody at a relative’s home north of Konawa, according to Sheriff Shannon Smith.

“(Deputies) spotted him at his grandfather’s house,” Smith said.

“There were several people gathered for like a family barbecue," Smith said, "so one of the deputies went down the road about a half-mile, parked and walked around the woods behind the residence. Another deputy pulled up (to the residence) and (Bounds) kind of eased out the back and they caught him back behind the house near the wooded area.”

Bounds had several warrants for his arrest, one of which was for reportedly shooting a gun near deputies during a pursuit earlier this year.

“We don’t know that he was shooting at the deputies, all we know is they were in pursuit and he bailed out of the car and some shots were fired shortly thereafter,” Smith said. “We don’t know that he was shooting at our guys, but there were shots fired.”

Bounds is being held on a $10,000 bond and other charges are pending, Smith said.

In October 2008, a warrant was issued for Bounds following failure to appear in court on several charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery, public intoxication and a misdemeanor charge of carrying a concealed firearm. The charges were originally filed in Seminole County District Court in July 2006.

More recently, a warrant was issued for Bounds’ arrest in December 2008 for reckless conduct of a firearm.
