VAMOOSA — Vamoosa community plans a homecoming celebration May 24.
Vamoosa is a community approximately 5 miles northwest of Konawa in Seminole County. The town was established May 19, 1903, with a post office until March 20, 1918.
According to former teacher and historian, the late Mrs. Mel Horton, “Vamoosa School was organized in 921 by the consolidation of three smaller schools: East Gore, West gore and Punkin Center. The original building was a two-story brick in which both elementary and high school classes were taught. The first graduating class of a four-year high school was 1931. A fire destroyed the two-story structure in November 1947.”
A new building was erected which stills tands and houses Grace Community Church. The last graduation of high school seniors was in 1968 and elementary school continued into the 1980s. Following the close of the grade school, Vamoosa School became a part of Konawa School system.
The reunion takes place from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. at Vamoosa School building. Those planning to eat the noon meal should take a covered dish.
