Awards given; pools to open

— Ada City Council was presented with an award at Monday night’s meeting.
Linda Barnett with the Oklahoma Main Street organization, presented a plaque to both city council and Ada Main Street for reaching the $10 million reinvestment award.
“Our community has really profited and prospered on this program,” Mayor Barbara Young said.
Ada City Manager David Hathcoat reminded residents Ada swimming pools will be opening Thursday. Wintersmith pool was filled Monday and Glenwood is expected to be filled Tuesday.
Young mentioned with summer coming around and schools out for the summer, children will be at play outside.
She reminded drivers to be on the lookout for pedestrian or bicycling traffic.
In other business, city council members approved an agreement with the State of Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management for the subgrant of Emergency Preparedness Grant Program funds.
Hathcoat said this is a program the city of Ada applies for and receives every year since Ada has an emergency management program.
City council also approved other business that regularly appears on the agenda. Each year, the city approves the 911 Emergency Telephone Service Fee at the rate of 15 percent. Hathcoat explained the funds support the Pontotoc County 911 system.
Interactive Responsive Technologies (IRT) is also to receive funds as part of an incentive agreement. The awarding of the incentive funds is based on jobs, formula and tax forms submitted to the state, Young said. IRT will receive $22,592.27 for the fourth calendar quarter of 2007 and $22,237.02 for the first calendar quarter of 2008. The funds come from Proposition 2. IRT and city of Ada entered into the agreement June 1, 2005.
City council members approved the purchase of a compact excavator for the city for the amount of $66,500. However, Chaprell Kuboto offered to sell two attachments along with it for a total price of $70,725. Hathcoat said the attachments would probably be purchased in the future and this would be a head start on the purchases and cost efficient.
Hathcoat thanked city departments for helping with clean up around the city the past Saturdays.
“I do appreciate it,” he said.
Young reminded residents that if lawn clippings and large discarded items needed to be picked up, to phone 580-436-8100 and let the city know about the waste.
