ECU, CLEET offering hostage, crisis training

A three-day Hostage/Crisis Negotiation Training Seminar designed for both mental health and law enforcement professionals who consult with law enforcement will be offered July 11-13 by East Central University’s Tribal Police Training Program, the ECU Psychology Department and the Council on Law Enforcement Education and Training (CLEET).

The seminar will be held at the CLEET facility in Ada, located at 2401 Egypt Rd., and is limited to the first 50 registrants. The registration fee is $275 before June 1 or $300 after June 1.

Twenty-five mandatory training hours have been approved for law enforcement, and 24 Continuing Education Units are available for mental health professionals.

Instructors Stephen J. Romano and John A. Call of Crisis Management Consultants Inc. will use a team process to teach the curriculum which includes such topics as the philosophy of crisis negotiations, active listening skills, strategies & techniques, incident assessment, suicide intervention and tactical role of the negotiator.

Romano, the primary trainer, worked the last 20 years of his law enforcement career at the FBI where he most recently was chief of the Crisis Negotiation Unit of the Critical Incident Response Group. In that role he led more than 400 trained crisis negotiators in 56 field offices and was responsible for the overall operational, instructional, research, budget and personnel oversight.

Call, a psychologist, attorney and diplomat in forensic psychology of the American Board of Professional Psychology and the American Board of Forensic Psychology, consults on threat assessment, employment issues and/or post-trauma intervention with numerous federal, state, law enforcement and professional organizations. He has extensive FBI training in hostage/crisis negotiations and has written and published widely in this area.

The seminar’s training materials and lunches are included in the registration fee. A registration form, speakers’ biographical information and a list of hotels offering group rates are available on the website at www.ecok.edu/continuing_ed/crisisnegotiation.
