Denice Gilliam named Tupelo School teacher of the year

TUPELO — Tupelo Public School announces it 2008 Teacher of the Year is Denice Gilliam. She teaches junior high and high school language and English at Tupelo Schools. She also serves as the high school and junior high academic team coach as well as sponsor of Tupelo Student Council, Oklahoma and National Honor Society and Gifted and Talented program.
“Mrs. Gilliam wears many hats and wears them well. Our students love and respect her a great deal,” said Tupelo HIgh school Principal Kevin Mann.
Gilliam graduated from Byng High School in 1971, earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in counseling from East Central University.
She began her teaching career at Hanna Public Schools in 1992. Her first teaching assignment was in language arts and library media specialist. In 1994, she moved to Sasakwa Public Schools were she taught for six years. She has spent the last seven years at Tupelo Public Schools.
She and her husband, Clifford, makes their home in the Lovelady Community. They have one son, Josh, and a daughter, Misty, and two grandchildren.
