Officials urge safety

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Ada The Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) Injury Prevention Service reminds residents to have fun and take precautions to prevent fireworks-related injuries during the Fourth of July.

The OSDH Injury Prevention Service offers the following tips to keep family and friends safe this Fourth of July:

Before using fireworks, people should check with their local police or fire department to determine what is legal in the area where fireworks will be used.

All warnings and instructions should be followed. People should never build or experiment with homemade fireworks. Children should never be allowed to handle or light fireworks, including sparklers. Sparklers burn at more than 1,000º F.

Fireworks should never be held while trying to light them. Never relight fireworks that malfunction.

Spectators should be out of range and warned before fireworks are lit. Fireworks should only be lit on a smooth, flat surface away from houses, dry leaves and brush, and flammable materials.

A bucket of water or water hose should be kept nearby in case of fire. The fire department should be called if a fire starts.

For more information, phone the OSDH Injury Prevention Service at (405) 271-3430, or the local county health department.
