Long-time Coalgate optomotrist retires

Sharon Mowdy

COALGATE — Dr. Duke Gardner and his wife Jean invite the public to come by their office at 120 N. Main on Friday, July 14, for a farewell party. Refreshments will be served from 1-4 p.m.

Dr. Gardner, who opened his optometry practice in Coalgate in 1958, officially retired at midnight June 30. His wife Jean also retired as she assisted in the practice by working as receptionist, secretary, bookkeeper and insurance clerk for the past 48 years, being full-time since 1974.

The Gardners have witnessed many changes in optometry. In 1958 only four pieces of equipment were needed to practice, and Dr. Gardner purchased them for $3,860. The last piece of equipment Dr. Gardner purchased — a Digital Fundus camera — cost more than $18,000 in 2005. In 1958 a pair of single vision lenses cost $29; in 2006 they cost $183.

Patients also have choices for vision correction. In 1958 only PMMA contacts were available. Now contacts come in a variety of materials and colors and some types may be worn continuously for 30 days. The patient may now opt for Laxis surgery which can eliminate the need to wear glasses.

Duke and Jean look forward to this latest change in their lives. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, have four children — Pamela, Kevin, Doug and Janet — and have had many “adopted kids.” They now anticipate spending time with their nine grandchildren.

With Dr. Gardner’s retirement, patients must go out of town for optometry services. Dr. Gardner is willing to help another doctor set up practice just as he received help when he first started. As Dr. Gardner said, “If anyone is interested or knows of someone who may be interested, please contact me. The opportunity is here.”

Art work will be on display in the meeting room of the Coal County Public Library on Saturday, July 15, from 1-3 p.m. Instructor Tonya Horn invites everyone to come by and see the talent of local students from June art classes.

Vacation Bible Schools will be in full swing next week.

Children from Kindergarten through 6th grade are invited to join “Adventure of the Treasure Seekers” at the Coalgate First United Methodist Church, 106 N. Newell Street. Treasure seekers will meet Monday, July 17, through Thursday, July 20, from 6-8 p.m.
