Shots fired in neighborhood

Randy Mitchell Staff Writer

Ada A warm, quiet evening in a northwest Ada neighborhood was interrupted by the sound of gunfire Sunday.

Ada police, sheriff’s deputies, Chickasaw Nation Lighthorse police and troopers from the Oklahoma Highway Patrol converged on the area soon after receiving a call reporting possible shots fired. Police blocked off streets and asked residents to stay in their homes until all was clear.

Police surrounded a residence in the 700 block of west Ninth. Authorities thought a suspect might be barricaded in the house where the gunfire emanated. A stereo was blasting music and police were not getting a response.

It was confirmed actual shots were fired when a bullet hole was discovered in a nearby resident’s home. The bullet passed through the siding and sheetrock interior wall of the family’s home and into the living room.

Ada Assistant Police Chief Carl Allen said in order to err on the side of caution, the Ada police Critical Incident Response Team was called in to clear the suspect house.

“They couldn’t get any response from the house, so they called in the CIRT team,” Allen said. “They breached the door but nobody was inside.”

Ada firefighters and EMS were on standby in case of fire from flash-bang grenades or injury during the attack.

Neighbors were out in their yards, understandably concerned. Based on witness statements, authorities have identified persons of interest but no suspects have been located.

After finding shell casings at the scene, police believe two caliber weapons may have been used indicating an exchange of gunfire.

No blood was found at the scene, but police checked area hospitals in case a suspect was wounded in the gunfire.

The matter is still under investigation, Allen said.
