Health, sciences students receive awards

Students in East Central University’s College of Health and Sciences have received recognitions and awards for their academic achievements during the 2007-08 academic year.

In the Department of Biology, recipients of the Claud Carter Scholar Award were Lindsey Pruitt of Bokchito, Julie Bruner of Healdton and Casey Chatfield of Ada. The Thomas J. McKnight Scholarship went to Brandon Banks and Jessie Wooten, both of Shawnee. Charity Holder of Coalgate was recognized for her second-place oral presentation at the Tri-Beta Biological Society’s Regional Meeting.

Students honored in the Department of Cartography/Geography included Adam Milligan of Ponca City, the recipient of the Joe V. Sims Scholarship, and Justin Curry of Ada who received the T.A. Kelly-Whitney Griffin Scholarship. Recognized as poster presenters at ECU Research Day were Chloe Price of Ardmore and Adam Milligan of Ponca City.

Several cartography/geography students were recognized for presenting posters at Oklahoma Research Day and for completing geotechniques internships last summer. They were Erik Abrahamson of Ada, Visual Lease Services; Thomas Creecy of Marietta, Chesapeake Energy; Corey Gillum of Ada and Adam Milligan of Ponca City, the Chickasaw Nation; Weston Jackson of Ada, the City of Durant; Lavonda Prather of Maysville, the City of Tishomingo; and Chloe Price of Ardmore, the Carter County Assessor’s Office.

The Department of Chemistry honored Cassandra D. Overton of Henryetta as the recipient of the Willis Decker Scholarship. Outstanding Performance/Service in Chemistry Awards went to Stephanie McCarty of Ringling; Hara Seo of Gwanjoo, South Korea; Jean-Jacques Fabrice Dogbo and Andrew Whitley, both of Ada; and Coby Webster of Calvin.

The ECU Foundation Chemistry Award went to Rachel A. Young of Shawnee, and Michael Worcester of Pontotoc earned the CRC Freshman Chemistry Handbook Award.

Research Day Presenters included Audrey Myers of Ada, Alisha Shepherd of Snow, Jesse Redden of Ardmore, Stephanie McCarty of Ringling, David Rogers of McAlester and James E. Brown III of Cushing. Audrey Myers was also recognized for presenting at ECU’s Academic Excellence Day and Research Day at the Capitol.

In the Department of Computer Science, Manuel Rojas of La Porte, Texas, received the Mihov Scholarship Award and Rodney Weaverling of Ada was named the Outstanding Computer Literacy Student.

Jayson Bucy and Derrek Bond of Ada, Justin Martin of Stratford, Dakota Dugger of Holdenville and Phillip Carter of Davis were named the Outstanding Freshmen Computer Science Majors. The Outstanding Sophomore Computer Science Majors were Sarah Newell of Earlsboro and Jay Prasad of Surrey, British Columbia.

James Walley of Oklahoma City and Ashley Joyce of Ada were named the Outstanding Junior Computer Science Majors. Outstanding Senior Computer Science Majors were George Larson of Kiowa, Steven Ashley of McAlester, Justin Lane of Sapulpa, Matt Wiles of Shawnee and Manuel Rojas.

In the Department of Environmental Health Science, Tyler M. Jackson of Ada received the Holcim Environmental Health Science Scholarship.

Students in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences received a number of awards and recognitions. Robert McGehee of Ardmore and Jesseca Thomas of Caney were presented the Outstanding Family and Consumer Sciences Education Award. The Outstanding General Family and Consumer Sciences Award went to Billie Witter of Oklahoma City and the Outstanding Retail Merchandising Award went to Amanda Edwards of Ada.

Recognized as graduating seniors in Phi Upsilon Omicron were Calli Presley, Crystal Wade and Janessa Long, all of Ada, Ashley Pruitt of Durant, Heather Wingfield of Caddo, Amanda Caldwell of Fort Towson, Jesseca Thomas of Caney and Robert McGehee of Ardmore.

Honored for their 2007-08 roles in the Oklahoma Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Student Unit Section were Robert McGehee of Ardmore, treasurer; Demetra Stanfield of Caddo, membership chair; and Julie Jackson of Ardmore, vice chair and recipient of the ECU Leadership Award.

Other recipients recognized were Robert McGehee, Ardmore, the Grace Hyder Richmond Award and the Francisco-Hatchett Scholarship; Calli Presley, Ada, the Grace Hyder Richmond Award; Savannah Walck of Byars and Maranda Babb of Ada, the Grace George Scholarship; Kelsey Ratcliff of Atoka, the Trease Layton Scholarship; and Courtney Matlock of Ada, a 2008 Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service Internship.

In the Department of Health Information Management, Outstanding Academic Achievement honors went to junior Julie West of Coalgate and senior Julie Gamble of Maysville.

The Department of Mathematics awarded scholarships to Charlie Anne Roberts of Wister, the E.O. Box Memorial Scholarship; James Avey of Ada, the Darrell Terrell Memorial Scholarship; and Jing Chen of Ada, the East Central Credit Union Applied Mathematics Scholarship.

Recipients of James O. Danley Memorial Scholarships were Kevin Peoples Jr., Brandan Rosa and Jayson Bucy, all of Ada; and Megan Miller of Winter Haven, Fla. Laura Johnson of Holdenville and Tyler Walker of Seminole were awarded Kate Knight Memorial Scholarships.

The ECU Nursing Alumni Award went to Leah Buchanan, Cynthia Smith, Amanda James and Julia Ngarui all of Ada; Nicole Smith of Allen; Leah Keller of Ardmore; Tammy Dee Banker of Durant; Amanda Lee Hoffpauir of Kingston; Alicia R. Flick of Meeker; and Debra Carrell of Stonewall.

The Department of Nursing also presented the Elizabeth & Francis Schmelling Excellence in Nursing Award to Carla Cochran of Atoka and Michelle Harman of Ardmore. Alicia Flick of Meeker was awarded the Oklahoma State Medical Alliance - Anne Garrison Nursing Scholarship.

Rebecca Andrews of Ada and Tammy Dee Banker of Durant were recognized for gaining Oklahoma Nursing Association Region Six Membership. Banker, Crystal Ross of Tishomingo, Jeannie Heil of Pauls Valley, Lois Peevyhouse of Durant, Brenda Lankford of McAlester, Rebecca McGuire of Atoka and Asusena Morales of Madill all received Physician’s Manpower Training Commissions Awards.

ECUNSA Scholarships went to Stephanie Cannon of Stonewall, Krista D. Weeks of Ada, Courtney Woodson of Ardmore and Pushpendra Pahari of Pokhara, Nepal.

Students who were recognized in the Department of Physics included Prachanda Subedi of Kathmandu, Nepal, Kristen Thompson and Jessica Ferguson of Elmore City, Darrin Foster of Ada and Heath Quiett of Wewoka, recipients of Brown Mackin Scholarships. The first Edward M. Smith Memorial Gift Scholarship went to Caleb Wingo of Ada as the outstanding student in medical physics.

Pfeffer Scholarships went to Andrew Whitley of Ada, biology; Saehan Park of Seminole, chemistry; Sarah Newell of Earlsboro, computer science; Elizabeth A. Cookson of Muskogee, environmental health science, Cindy A. Barlow of McAlester, health information management; and Amanda C. Martin of Ada, nursing.

The Carlock Scholarship went to Courtney Woodson of Ardmore, and Naseam Mayahi of Seminole received the first Shelby Jane Bays Memorial Scholarship.

Students selected by the NASA National Space Grant College and Fellowship Program for 2007-08 were recognized. Scholarship recipients were Thomas Bowdler of Holdenville, James E. Brown III of Cushing, Mark Gaches of Schulter, Felicia Goure of Holdenville, Jessica Johnston of Davis, Rhonda Maness of McAlester, Adam Milligan of Ponca City, Samantha Wright of Sulphur and Richard Neal and Daniel Stettler, both of Ada.

Sarah Morris of Purcell received the NASA Tutoring Award and Rachael Pattison of Ada received the NASA Research Award.
