Science, technology programs available

The Chickasaw Nation education services department is developing interactive science programs through For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology (FIRST), an international organization committed to inspiring young students to be science and technology leaders.

The Chickasaw Nation is sponsoring three FIRST programs available for students ages 6 to 18. The programs include Junior FIRST LEGO League, FIRST LEGO League and the FIRST Robotics Competition.

Junior FIRST LEGO League is an exciting opportunity for Chickasaw students 6 to 9 years of age. It encompasses the concepts of all FIRST programs to inspire, excite and introduce students to the wonders of science, technology and engineering. Junior FIRST LEGO League teaches the benefits of teamwork, sparks interest in science and technology, introduces basic design skills through a hands-on approach with the fun of LEGO building and provides a culture of sharing and learning from others.

Through FIRST LEGO League, students experience an exciting and fun global robotics program that ignites an enthusiasm for discovery, science and technology for Chickasaw students ages 10 to 14. Each year FIRST LEGO League teams embark on an adventurous Challenge based on current, real-world issues. Guided by a team coach and assisted by mentors, the students research and solve a real-world problem based on the Challenge theme, present research and solutions and build an autonomous robot using engineering concepts.

The FIRST Robotics Competition is a sport of the mind designed to help high school students discover the interesting and rewarding life of engineers and researchers. The competition challenges teams of students and mentors to solve a common problem by designing and building a robot in a six-week timeframe using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules. To compete in competitions, students must focus on design, demonstrated team spirit, gracious professionalism, maturity and the ability to overcome obstacles.

The deadline to register for Junior FIRST LEGO League and FIRST LEGO League is July 31. The deadline to register for the FIRST Robotics Competition is September 30. For more information phone Amber Fox at (580) 421-7711.
