New program to begin at Ada Public Library

Ada Ada Public Library will be presenting “Sovereign Worlds,” a new reading and discussion series on Wednesdays from 6:30-8:30 p.m. beginning Sept. 17 and continuing through Nov. 19. Programs will be held every three weeks.

Books, theme materials and services for these programs are provided by “Let’s Talk About It, Oklahoma,” a project of the Oklahoma Humanities Council, with additional support from the Inasmuch Foundation. Funding for this series is provided by a grant to Ada Public Library from Oklahoma Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The program fee and refreshments are provided by Ada Library Friends.

The selected two non-fiction and two fiction books in this series explore the search for the sovereignty of native peoples. “We need to look forward to writing about people who happen to be Indians (uniformly stoic, brave, nice to their friends),” wrote Modoc scholar and novelist Michael Dorris.

Rex Morrell will open the series with a discussion of Vine Deloria Jr.’s book “Custer Died for Your Sins: An Indian Manifesto.” Morrell is a frequent LTAI scholar in Ada and many other public libraries. He has served on the city council in Tishomingo since 1999 and was the mayor from 1999-2007. Morrell has taught history at Murray State College since 1969. Other scholars in this series are Lewis Parkhill, Tricia Yarbrough and Robert Greenstreet.

Sign-up for the series and pick up copies of the books at Ada Public Library. For more information, phone 580-43-8121.
