Club news: Program on money management presented to Colbert HCE

ADA — On July 16, Colbert Home and Community Education group held its regular monthly meeting at the home of Joyce Jared.
The meeting was called to order by President Rozale Welch and the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag was said in unison. This was followed by a reading by Jared from the Book of Devotions by Joyce Meyer. Elaine Sundquist read the OHCE Creed aloud. Ruth Janik called roll and members replied by answering the question, “Have you ever played the stock market?” Bernice Patrick gave the treasurer’s report.
Welch advised members the summer council meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 6 in the Vanoss club house. Vanoss HCE will host it. The next council meeting will be in December and Colbert HCE will host it. No one from Colbert HCE attended the July 13-15 OHCE state meeting. Janik read the minutes of the previous meeting.
The topic for July’s program was Layin’ Nest Eggs and it was presented by Sundquist. She began by passing out to each person a Consumer Knowledge Test of 14 questions. After the tests were finished she read the correct answers aloud and some created discussions or comments. The guide for the program was Money Management in Challenging Times, by Megan Logan, extension educator for Seminole County. Topics covered included airline traveling, vehicle issues and various types of insurances (home, renters, auto and life.) The purchase of appliances, telephone service, food shopping, medicine shopping and even funeral arrangements were also addressed. This program offered advice on everyday living.
Jared said the closing blessing and refreshments were served to Rozale Welch, Elaine Sundquist, Joyce Jared, Bernice Patrick and Ruth Janik.
Colbert HCE’s next meeting will be Aug. 20 at 1:30 p.m. in the home of Elaine Sundquist.
VVRH Auxiliary
ADA — Members of Valley View Regional Hospital Auxiliary met July 17 in the classrooms of the hospital. The meeting was opened by President Lois Morgan.
Bob Waller gave the minutes of the last meeting, which were approved as read. Bob Waller also gave the treasurer’s report which was approved.
Catharine Choate gave a lesson of instructions to the volunteer workers. There was a request from occupational therapy for equipment and the members voted to buy it. New volunteer members were introduced.
Mary Sue Roberts entertained the group by telling humorous stories.
Attending were Jim Barlow, Dolores Davis, Gene Davis, Doris Brooks, Mary Basham, Anita Miller, Mary Sue Roberts, Rita Branscum, Charlotte King, Ann Lucas, Mary Jo Whitwell, Betty Neely, Jesse Parr, Jacquie Cartmell, Jane Boomhower, Don Ellis, Lois Morgan, Bob Waller, Georgia Stewart, Wanda Privett and Catharine Choate.
Diamond 'K'
President Juanita Sutton opened the July 22 meeting of Diamond "K" Kiwanis Club with the Pledge of Allegiance. Eldon Billings led in prayer.
James Cochran introduced the featured speaker, Ronald Berk, financial investor for Edward-Jones. Berk presented a program on Papua, New Guinea. He and his wife, Debbie lived in New Guinea for eight years.
Berk was in charge of all maintenance and construction for the Nazarene Hospital in Papua.
A business session followed the program. Bob Ardiana reported the Flex 'n Gate party at Wintersmith Park Sunday was very large. According to the workers, they were kept very busy making snow cones.
Interclub Chairman, M.E. Carr announced the next interclub would be to Davis. Members are to meet at Cumberland Church at 10:45 a.m. to carpool to Davis. Six members plan to attend.
Treasurer Andy Hood reported a final summary of $2, 128.76 on net sales of the fish Fry. This is the main project the club does to finance the Ada Diamond “K” Scholarship Program.
President Elect Dan Zimmerman announced tentative plans for the club’s annual Christmas program. He will report back to the club when the plans are finalized. Marlene Green’s husband Dean was reported as still in the hospital. Frank Fountain is still unwell.
Two Ada Diamond "K" Members are leaving. June Cope is moving to Warner to be near her daughter and Sheila Harris is moving to be near her son.
The meeting was adjourned.

Ada Diamond “K” Kiwanis Club meets every Tuesday at 8 a.m. at Ada Public Library on the second floor meeting room.
